I didn't see this in my search of the forums so forgive me if it's been discussed.
After installing XP SP2, I could no longer see my NEF thumbnails when using Windows Explorer. I found the fix posted on Nikon's support site at this site. The file is 592kb and changes the registry to make your computer understand that NEF files contain a thumbnail which can be extracted. It solved my problem.
