I am looking at various alternatives for flashes for my Rebel. I have an older fully manual Quantarray, but would like e-TTL capability and a motorized zoom head.

The ones i have found that might meet my needs are:
Sunpak PZ5000AF$150
Canon 550EX $320
Sigma DG500 Super2 $200
Sigma DG 500 ST $150

So what features are useful?
Wireless capability (DG Super and 550EX have it)
Modeling Light - I have enever used one, how useful is it?
Low light AF assist light?

The Sunpak seems to be the only one with auto and manual zoom capability, and the ability to lock the tilt/swivel.

All have GN's of 130-139. Recycle time, batteries, etc all seem similar.

My current use would bejust general use, with maybe weddings in the future or similar event/portrait use.

I will one day (xmas??) get as set of alienbees, so interfacing with them, if possible or desireable, would be plus.

The sigma 500 super does have manual zoom as well as auto. It also has an optical slave built in. I have one and love it.

i think the only difference between the Super2 and ST is the ST lacks the wireless feature. All 4 of these can be fired optically, and i have an optical to hotshoe slave trigger now ($15, works on any flash). I can see the benefits to wireless triggering, but that can be added, albeit at some cost.

The other day I asked some questions about my new flash unit, I got some very good info, a very in depth article in particular was posted by floyd:

My flash posting

I thought you may find it useful / interesting.

Promaster 7500dx is what I bought and it has a bunch of features. Altho it might be a bit under your guide number but it's plenty powerful for everything i've used it for.

The Sigma DG500 Super is a fantastic flash, not as solidly built as the 550EX but just as powerful and a virtually identical feature set. I recently had my 30th Birthday and was going to get the 550EX as a present from the GF, however after a LOT of reading of reviews comparing the two I eventually went for the Sigma and a Canon 50mm 1.8 Prime lens, both together still cost less than the 550 EX on its own.
One thing I am not sure about is that at a later date, if I want to get the 550EX, is the wireless E-TTL of the sigma compatible with the 550EX?, hopefully it is, but at the moment I am so happy with the sigma I would probably just get another one so its a matching pair. Highly recommended.
