Hey guys. A friend and I were litterally pulled off the street and into a restaurante by the manager while we were downtown looking for things to shoot. She insisted we take all the photos we want of the inside. Gave uf the grand tour and all. It turned into a paying gig. They called us back after seeing the photos we shot of the one place and asked if we would shoot their other sites. We met with the client Saturday and took more shots. She sat with us and we discussed payment. After we were done the general manager let us know we were low balling ourselves. He liked our work and would be recommending us to otheres. We are gonna stick to the pricing we quoted him but have no idea what is a fair rate per hour and/or per shot. We'd love to hear back from any other freelancers. We live in San Diego, California. ANY info would be appreciated.

What were your prices?

From what I've seen, a professional product/location shoot would be $100-$125/hour, for the shoot alone. Prints would be priced seperately, as would any commerical use of the images (website use, brochures, etc. would all be on a rights-managed contract).

Yup, sounds good..and have a minimum price set..so for jobs that are only 1/2 hour your minimum charge is still $100 or whatever.

To me it's a math equation.

Take the cost for you(time, travel, supplies etc.)

Then take what it is they are asking for (prints, digital images, copyright for advertisement etc.)

I guess what I mean is,, don't charge someone two blocks away that only wants a few images to hang on his wall the same price you chage someone who is 30 miles away and wants full rights for advertising. Also, don't worry about what the guy down the street is charging for his photography.. You may have different types of skill, experience, more overhang to pay for, a more expensive camera.. and you just might have better quality.. So it's better to think what it costs you to do the job, then add in your personal fee (on top of materials etc.)

That's funny, Norman. I was for 25 years an architectural photographer in San Diego, my home town, then "retired" and became a chef. So you got both my bases covered, in my town.

It's real important to know what use he wants to make of the images. But basically, if you're just starting out, 100 bucks an hour, minimum 100 bucks, plus an agreed-upon price for prints, should be fine. An established architectural photographer would have a minimum of at least 500 dollars for the shoot.

Working with 4x5 film, we charged by the view or by the day, figuring 8-10 images a day. But working digital, by-the-view pricing is less relevant.

I'm no help -- that being said -- would you mind posting some of these photos you took of the restaurant? I'm curious to see what angles you covered it from that sparked their interest in you so much. Thanks.
