Just wondering now many folks have this item, and how long it took to arrive in your part of the world?

I ordered one at the same time as my camera, but have been waiting since November to have a portrait shutter release.

Also I suppose any comments on the negative or positive about the build quality would be interesting, I've heard some negatives about it breaking contact with heavy lenses mounted on the camera..

Cheers, Me.

Sorry to hear that it is taking so long to get your grip. I bought mine with the camera and therefore it arrived at the same time.

Anyway, I have no had any problem with the grip and truthfully cannot stand the camera without it! :) For me, it makes the camera quite comfortable. The build is as good as the camera. Much better than the grip that you get for the 300D.

As far as breaking contact... I don't know what would cause this unless they are using a HUGE lens like a 600mm L lens or something...

Hope this helps.

I know in Australia these things can take a little while to become freely available in large quantities....a bit like the cameras themselves when they are first released!

I pretty much have my BG-E2 attached to my 20D all the time, mostly for the extra battery, but I've had no problems hanging the 70-200 with a 1.4x tele off the end of it - the grip doesn't move if you make sure the screw is tight. The thing is pretty solid, no problems with the build quality.
As for shipping times, a couple of months seems a bit extreme, even for surface mail - you should chase the shipping agent and/or the seller, get some tracking info on it (or a new shipment if they've lost it).

No troubles getting one, but I received mine when I ordered the camera from B&H.

Build quality seems fine to me. My only very small gripe is that every so often I need to tighten the wheel that secures the battery grip to the body, but it is not a daily occurence. But it does seem to loosen up very slightly over time. It would be nice if they had developed an attachment mechanism that locks it more securely in place.

Absolutely no regrets having one though - it really makes portrait aspect photography so much easier and balances the camera out well too.

The battery grip is great. I pretty much have the same complaint as Rich and level of aggrevation ... ie. no biggie.

I love the grip because I often let the camera hang on the neckstrap and it balances the camera really well, even with the 550EX flash on top. It stops it from tipping forward.

Tar folks..

I emailed Canon directly here in NZ, and got a reply back from the 'Assistant Product Manager - Photographic' who is going to call me to reply directly to my concerns. I suspect that's so I can't forward the detailed reply to anyone. :-).

Long story short, I'll apparently have my bg-e2 at the end of this month. I'm not holding my breath..

Cheers, Chris H.

One last reply to my own thread, in case someone searches this up one day...

I used the grip in anger for the first time today.

What a great addition to the camera!

My thoughts on the grip:
- The build quality is not really up to the quality of the camera, but it's still very good. It is pretty much all plastic, although it's decent weight, and rigid.
- It feels a little 'square' to hold, but the rubber insert is fine. The square feel and look with be a necesity as it holds two BP511's (511a, 512 etc...)
- The reach to the secondary command wheel (back wheel, whatever you want to call it) is a little further from the grip than it is from the main camera grip, and the overall size means that if you've got small hands you'll really want to try one in the shop before buying. It may simply be too large to use effectively.
- Yes, you can get it to disconnect if you put a bit of twist on the camera/grip but it'd have to be a damned heavy lens to cause this problem in real use. I suspect the people who complained about the 70-200IS causing this problem may have either had a bad copy of the grip, or didn't have it sitting on propperly. I used it today with a 580ex on top of the camera, and 17-40L on front and didn't see a problem.
- Yes, the comments about batteries indicating low ealier are true, that's life, take spares.. If you can spring for the 20d and grip you can afford some more spare batteries, stop being a tight-wad.
- Shooting portrait with a portrait grip again is great, no more sore wrist from reaching over the cam.
- It'd be great if the grip had a 'joystick' on it like the back of the cam. Changing focus point is more intuitive with the joystick than the command wheel, although both work fine. I'll get used to that. Using the command wheel is still faster than having to look at the top of the camera.
- I tried the 6x AA cell clip.. The manual says it's for emergencies only, and they're not wrong! I put 6 new standard energisers in it, and got 51 photos before they indicated flat.
- For they way I shoot this is a great accessory, although it does make the camera look huge (badass) I don't think it'll be coming off in a hurry. I might remove it if I do any street photography, but then I'm looking at getting a couple of 'L' lenses, and they are huge as well, so I might as well look the complete twat!
- It's not worth buying this grip for just the extra battery, as you'll not get 2x the life, probably more like 1.5x due to the voltage drop in the grips battery switching electronics. Get this grip if you shoot events or anything that requires portrait orientation a lot, it'll save you a whole lot of pain in the wrist from 'overhanding' your camera/flash combo.

As always, just my 2c worth :-).
