Variations of the same theme -- take an image that pays special attention to the natural textures around us. Although they could all be part of the same challenge "Natural textures", I would much rather see the scope narrowed to a specific type of natural substance. Such as:

Leather -- take a photo of leather. Special attention should be given to accentuate the natural texture.

Stone -- take a photo of stone. Special attention should be given to accentuate the natural texture.

Wood -- take a photo of wood. Special attention should be given to accentuate the natural texture.

This would be neat...the problem comes when it's time to vote and comment. Realistically, most people would be quite bored after looking at 100+ images of leather texture...I know I would find it incredibly difficult to vote accurately on this.

I do like the idea of a natural texture challenge, though...

How about the texture of ice in all it's various forms. I have a whole series of photographs of frost on windows that I could post for some time, but here is a recent one.

David,

Prettyhard to do a time-based ice challenge when the members of this site are spread throughout the world in both hemispheres. A significan number would be limited to their freezers...

I think textures in general would be a great challenge, or a specific theme (stone/leather/bark/whatever) as well, since they are everywhere and so varied. Though people with good macro lenses may be advantaged, it would still remain a widely accessible challenge, and I think would minimize the amount of luck involved.

I'd rather the subject be broken down into the more specific textures of stone, leather, & wood. It's more challenging that way. Water could be substituted for ice.
