Greetings...

I am taking a survey from several sources trying to help figure out if it would be worthwhile for my local art museum to sponsor a juried photo competition to help raise funds to support the museum's daily operating expenses. Your responses to these questions would be most appreciated...

1. Have you ever entered a juried competition that required a $25 or higher entry fee?

2. Have you ever entered a juried competition that required any entry fee?

3. If you answered NO to either of these, would you consider it in the future?

4. What sort of 'prize' would you expect the winner of a $25 entry competition to get?

Thanks for your responses :)

1. Have you ever entered a juried competition that required a $25 or higher entry fee?

No

2. Have you ever entered a juried competition that required any entry fee?

No

3. If you answered NO to either of these, would you consider it in the future?

Yes

4. What sort of 'prize' would you expect the winner of a $25 entry competition to get?

The number of entries times $25, and distributed the top placed photos.
Ok, for a solid number, um, I would say $500, but I don't know still =)

No, no, yes, and um...some camera equipment in the $400-500 range I'd think. Maybe a gift cert. to a local camera shop? Somewhere that'd be likely to donate some/all of the prize in exchange for advertising would be ideal. 300D body, perhaps, if that were the case.

4.A free exhibition of my quality work to give me nice local coverage at little expence to the museum...win/win .. all depends on the amount of entries really, but a prize that would give deliver, glory, noteriety and ego beyond measure (while costing the museum little) would appeal more than a few bucks. Unless it was a Mark II in the prize bag. ;)

1. no

2. no

3. depends on the reward

4. a percentage of the total money that the competition brings in. If you have 5,000 entries, I see no reason why the winner can't get a grand or two...but if you are only starting out and get 50 entries, I'd say $200 would sound good to me.

Thanks for your responses :)

$1,000 or more depending on the number of entries.

4. something tacky, useless or indiscreet is what I would expect. A sincere and thorough critique of the winning work would be better. An invitation to partake in another venue (selective exposure) would be good too.

1) No
2) No
3) yes
4) Depends. Number of entries, competition level, etc. I think you need to think about what level of entries you are trying to attract. Are you going for a large volume of entries? What type of criteria would you require for submissions? I guess what I'm saying is you would have to tailor the competition to attract beginning level photographers or more experienced photographers. Also, you would need to consider the credentials of the juror - I noticed in my area, the more impressive the bio of the juror is, the more the entry fee and prizes are. Also, most entrants would want some type of exposure - maybe an award of a solo exhibit for a specific length of time, or one of their prints enlarged and framed and put on display for a set time, etc. Just a few thoughts from I have seen in my area:)

just wanted to add if you have any kind of exhibit of the winner or all of the entries, there is usually an "opening night" the public is invited to attend for free with refreshments provided. Something to consider into your budget if you plan to do that. The local shows I do enter are non-juried, $15 entry fee for two entries (guaranteed to show one) at a local civic center. The shows last five weeks and have an opening night, and people are allowed to sell their photos with a 20% commission going to the civic center who oraganizes the event. Probably too much info - but there it is if you can use it:)

4. Depends on the number of entries, & places paid. There is a picture of the year award given in my county. No entry fee, Grand Prize 700, & they pay 4 places in both B&W, & color. If this is a fundraiser then either 30-20-10 or 40-30-20 with the fundee getting the remainder.
The few juried competitions I have seen are usually underwritten by advertisers such as the local camera shops, developing labs, galleries, & corporations.

4. I would expect around $200 for winner, $100 for 2nd, $50 for 3rd, and maybe give away a few Honorable Mentions and return their fee of $25, about the same as popular photo magazine does.

4. Depending on the number of entries - a percentage of the entry fees distributed among the top photos and/or some kind of exhibition rights for some of the winners.

5,000 entries and the winner gets a grand or 2? That would be a pretty weak payout for a $125,000 in entry fees.

But anyways..

1. Yes
2. No
3. Yes
4. I would expect that the pay out would be something in the line of:
1st 50%
2nd 25%
3rd 15%
and the remainder going to the organizer.

Of course if you get something on the order of 5000 entries then you might want to increase the payout slots to say the top 20 and do:
1st 25%
2nd 15%
3rd 10%
4th 7%
5th 6%
6th 5%
7th 4%
8th 3%
9th 2%
10th -20th return of the entry fee plus $5

and still you have a nice take for the organizer.

Of course if you follow the PGA everybody in the top 50% gets something...

1. Have you ever entered a juried competition that required a $25 or higher entry fee?
No, entered many competitions, but seeing an entry fee kills it. I would prefer to see the competition organizer get some sponsorship (such as Nikon) which would allow people to enter free and also most likely result in a more desirable prize.

I do not believe they should profit directly from peoples cash. Advertising etc is a nicer way to utilize a competition.

2. Have you ever entered a juried competition that required any entry fee?
Answer 1.

3. If you answered NO to either of these, would you consider it in the future?
No, not unless the prize was really worth it / or that I had a very apt image to submit

4. What sort of 'prize' would you expect the winner of a $25 entry competition to get?
Depends how big the competition is - a new D2x would be pretty good :)
(FWIW I won my D100 from a free to enter competition)

Thanks for your responses :)

4. If it's a museum fundraiser, no cash prize expected. Get merchants to donate prizes, if possible. Have an exhibition of entries, with winners prominently featured. I won one of these in California, got a 5-day Mexico cruise for 2.

4. Perhaps to be given some gallery space for a specified period of time to show more of your work, and "prizes" from area merchants/businesses. I agree that if you are raising funds for the operation of the museum, cash prizes would negate the whole purpose of the fundraiser and shouldn't be expected.

It would be great if some publication with a wide audience would be willing to publish a color repro of the winning work along with some artist information. This would be a great prize for the winner's marketing, and inexpensive (not to cut into fund raising) for the museum.

When I enter a contest I'm really not thinking too much about the prize... I know, I'll never make this into a living with that business plan :) Placing well is reward in itself for me. Prizes are just a bonus I don't expect.

don't care, as long as it worth at least $25.00 :) a new dslr would be nice though ... or adobe photoshop (i have it, but it's a good prize) ... or free gas for a year

100-lb sack of black turtle beans = gas for a year; will that do?

4. At this stage of my career, recognition as a winner would be great. I could use the credential... Anything beyond that would be icing on the cake.

3. My gut reaction was no, but never say never. If the right combination of event and organizers comes along, perhaps.
4. A significant percentage of the entry fees as prize money back to the contestants, with a fair and equitable amount reserved to the organizers for their efforts and payment to the judges for their time and energy.

Maybe
$100, an exhibition, winners published in newspaper, a membership in the museum, a special display of the winning entries in a way that would bring the photographers favorable exposure

2. No
3. Yes, perticularly for a good cause
4. Exhibition of the top winning photos and a small physical prize. Something donated by a local camera shop would be great. It doesn't have to be super pricey, perhaps worth more than the original $25, but I don't think you necesarily have to go all the way up to $500. The key is that this contest is a fun way to support the museum. If you play up the museum support part in your advertisement of the contest, I don't think you have to offer ridiculously expensive grand prizes. I also like coolhars newspaper publishing idea...that's the sort of thing you could get donated as well.
