Dropped my wife off in the shopping mall in Stirling last week and since it was one of those rare events in this part of the world..(a nice day)..I decided to kill time by taking a couple of pics of the local landmarks.
Stirling is situated in the Forth valley and is on the main route to the Highlands..(often called the gateway to the Highlands) and was therefore a very important and strategic place to control in times gone by.
The area is essentially flat carseland with three "Craigs" (or crags)which look like mini mountains sitting in a line a couple of miles apart.
Stirling castle sits on the centre craig with "Wallace`s monument" on the northern one.
The castle changed hands many times during the wars with the English and the area was the scene of two famous battles..Stirling Bridge..made famous by Mel GIbson`s portrayal of William Wallace in "Braveheart" and Bannockburn a few years later with Robert the Bruce leading the Scots against EdwardII`s army.

The area of the battle of Stirling bridge can be seen quite clearly in the pic of Wallace`s monument. Wallace`s army hid up on the craig until the English army had started crossing the narrow wooden bridge that crossed the winding river Forth. He allowed a certain number to cross then came charging down off the craig and gave battle. This caused chaos as the rest of the army was still in the act of crossing the bridge and could go neither one way or the other..it ended up a rout...However, as "Braveheart" depicted...he paid for it eventually.
The area to the left with houses and to the right(Rugby park)is the area of battle ..and the bridge itself is reckoned to have been a bit further to the left of where the current bridge is.
All this took place in the last decade of the 13th century and the monument was built in the late 1800`s.
For anyone visiting this part of the world..it`s well worth a look..the view from the top of the monument is breathtaking in good conditions.
