I think I'm going to start taking more serious pictures. It seems as though the "humorous" photos are not rated that high, even though the quality is professional and the idea is creative. Anybody else feel this is true?

Humor is even more subjective than art.
01/13/2005 04:58:05 PM · #3
I am not a fan of most humorous entries because:-

1) Few of them are even half as funny as their creators think they are
2) Once I've enjoyed any cheap laugh they provide I'm usually left with an image that's a complete failure on an aesthetic front

There are a few exceptions, of course, and those are the very few that I score highly indeed.

Technically, I don't really see anything wrong with this photo. I was trying to be funny, but either:
a) It's not funny
or
b) it offended some people
or
c) it technically sucks

I don't know.

I do - though when I vote I invariably give an extra point if it gets a snort or laugh out of me.

Definately true what you've said about humour. Unless it is really sick or sexy it won't make it here very often.

Many of my best finishes were humor shots, though it's worth noting that my only score below 6 since October was for the Humor challenge. Hmmm....

It looks like a toy. Toys nearly always bomb (even in jest). I should mention that the superb lighting reminded me of smokeditor when I saw this one, but I knew he hadn't used toys or woody.

You are the exception that proves the rule!

I hardly think 33rd place suggests people think it sucks...

Wow, don't sugar coat it or anything... Geez.

hey - at least i am honest...

would you like it sugar coated.? i didn't vote it 1 just because - i gave credit for the technicals of the image...

Humor.... is something we all could use a little more of.

I've taken sort of the opposite effect. My goal is to incorporate my humor into all or most of my pictures. My humor I'd imagine is (or will become) my trademark, my unique style. Granted, it's probably because I'm tripe at everything else, but I can atleast get a good chuckle now and then. I've never worried about the scores, and it'll probably keep me in the mid 5's, but as long as people like what I do, I'm happy. The main goal for me is to have someone smile at my image than for me to get a ribbon, y'know? But if I get a ribbon in consequence, that's alright, no big deal : )

There are very few photos that deserve a one... This definately isn't one of them.

I hear what you're saying but for me I would like to win at least one ribbon someday. I have a ways to go before I get there but I'm sure it brings a sense of accomplishment. If you think about it, if your photo scores a 1 out of 200+ photos, that means that everyone thought your photo was better than everyone elses... That must feel very nice.

I take humour just as seriously as a tragedy. I admire those who can do it well.
Why anyone would consciously choose not to take humourous photos is beyond me. I've never had the luxury of such choices. I try to capture what I see and how I see it. I have to. No one else can do it for me.

If I have a good sense of humour, it will show in my images. If I have a sense for drama, my images will have storms in them.

I'm not offended by soups remarks. He was being honest with what he thinks about the image. Comments like his (any comments actually) would be good during the challenge. I just think alot of people (myself included) kinda try not to make comments during a challenge that aren't "sugar coated" in the attempt to avoid conflict. I've left honest opinions on photos I disliked for one reason or another, and have gotten a couple of angry PMs because of it (even one that said "Who asked for your opinion?") Makes me not want to comment at all unless it's "sugar coated"

In your case, then, a picture is worth 1,000,000 words, but requires a narrator to view.

I tend to make humor or irony a point in many shots. Unfortunately, I think that if the joke fails with a person (whether they didn't think it was funny or were offended), they mark it down further than the technical points merit.

It's a danger that I can't seem to avoid. Especially my last attempt at humor using toys.

I wish you luck ... I'd be happy with mid-5's : )

I've found the humorous photos "do better" when just posted for comments, not actually entered into a challenge (check these scores).

I'm sorry to say this, but look at your scores. I think generally people chuckle at the photos but then just give it a 5 or lower. I think appeal and the technical aspect is what scores the photos higher.
