Not sure if anyone has tried this trick, but it works everytime for me. Just place a single coffee filter in front of your lens and choose the custom white balance option and do a test shot with the filter on.

My write up on how to do it on a Nikon D1x

does it matter which kind of coffee filter you use? I suspect that brownish filters would not work too well :)

I took a polarizer filter, removed the glass and glued in a filter from a breather mask (not sure what to call it). I used a 77mm filter and bought step down rings to fit all my lenses. It works great. I read about it somewhere but can't remember where. It works just like a ExpoDisk but way cheaper. I can take photos of it if anyone is interested.

I use a plasic Pringles lid that I just hold up in front of the lens. It is a nice trick.

I use the coffee filter trick regularly and it always works like a dream.

The pringles lid gives me a weird kinda cast. The filter works like a charm as far as I've seen. :)

I often use this trick in difficult lighting situations. Gives a nice balance. I keep a pack of coffee filters in my flash kit and an elastic for just this purpose.

I like using reds and blacks for green casts and stuff like that. for a white one why can't you just overexpose a picture insanely and use any scene?
