I'm a bit confused about the editing rules for the challenges. I do
understand the intention, but there is a grey zone left, I think. So,
what about dark frame subtraction for noise reduction. It's a very
standard technique in digital photography. Is it allowed here?

Unless you're doing a night shot, it really should not affect your photo too much. You can get rid of the occasional hot pixel with the DPC legal "Desceckle" filter.
