It's not fair to post a picture that nobody gets. The great thing about this site is amateurs get to rate amateurs. But sometimes amateurs dont see the bigger picture immediately (i'll include myself in that) and so the photo is not seen to its fullest depth.

I think it's cool to have lots of people vote on our photos, but I would like a crew or commitee of professionals or experts vote on our photos and have their own voting poll for the best picture of the week. That way I'm confident a crew of judges actually spent time to study the photo and give it the proper scores that it deserves.

I propose a Judges Vote section!

What do you think?

I think it would lose the "what do your peers" think quality.

to me, the whole idea here is to see what 'joe public' thinks.

however, there are websites out there that have judges, if you want that kind of opinion as well (i usually do). try better photo or bestfoto for that (after the voting is over on dpc of course).

I think it would be cool if some kind professional photographers would agree to picking out a few favourites and describing why they like them each week. But not to formally judge all the photos in the challenge.

I think there are sites onthe net that already do this.

There are sites like Jones Soda that are totally pop vote.

Then Photo Sig is more polished but more a community thing..no real weekly competition. But very nice photos.

Anyway..I'll include a list here for you to check out a bunch of different sites and different methods. We are unique..I hope we stay this way.

I haven't posted to any of these sites below or even visti them that much...I spend too much time here :-) but maybe they are what you are looking for.

The GREAT thing about dpchallenge is that you find out what regular people think about your photographs. It is certainly frustrating at times and does cater for a certain style of photography. But it goes without saying that to rank in the top 10% or so in DPC you need to have a real good photo. Beyond the top spots it is sometimes difficult to see why some do better than others, but they are mostly photos that are not as visually appealing. Also, if people don't get your photos here, they probably won't elsewhere unless there's a little hand-holding.

I like LISAE's idea that maybe we could "invite" some pros to critique photos every month or so. Maybe we could find volunteers to pick 5 shots from a challenge every 4 weeks or so to so a professional critique. To me that would be really interesting.

I like the idea, but I have prop[osed it before and it was pretty much overwhelmingly not liked.

Its obvious that the average joe here on DPCHALLENGE doesn't know That Pablo Picasso was spanish, or that Renoir is not a car.

I have a hard time believing many folks would be satisfied with a pro's opinion :-)

I think people nowadays don't give the respect to experience they use to. Its a 21'st Century attitude. The "I've got an opinion and it's as valid as yours no matter the experience" pervades society.

Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't.

I see pro work all the time. Not as an art judge..as an advertising guy who gets paid to get a final "look". Many times the photos I use or don't use have nothing to do with quality as much as what the client wants. My authority for this? The fact that it's my a$$ on the line..not the photographers..gives me the right.

I have taken proofs to a client from an award winning photographer that I thought were ready for the cover of Time and the client says.."Hmmmmmm...I don't like the eye color of that girl"..or my favorite "Can you make it look more like that So and So commercial that was on the superbowl last year"...

My point is..even with "Pro" judges I don't think people will accept their opinion anymore than the average joe opinion.

A 'pro' would give you a professional opinion. Another 'pro' would give you another professional opinion :)

I have seen results come back to our camera club from professional competitions where the judges disagree on photos just as badly as some voters disagree on photos here. Nothing wrong with that at all, but, keep in mind that photogrpaphic 'art' is just that... it's 'art' and everyone has their own opinions on it...

EXACTLY!!

I never have a single final word. I am always part of a hive mind. I am known to have a weird "artsy" take on things so nobody lets me have the absolute final say.

I am just the forward scout and the "fluffer" for the customer. Managing Ad Directors for whatever journal are the "absolute" final say. But then they make twice my income.

But you know whats really fun to watch? The big 6 figure income 'Ad Directors' forgetting that "The customer is always right"...... I tell em try to hang out on DP Challenge if you want a real taste of Joe 6-Pack humility!!!
