My intial impression of the entries is that there aren't a lot of original ideas in this world. There are always a few similar shots, but there are a LOT of them in this bunch.
There's one photo almost identical to mine, and I actually like the other one better. Their lighting is better. ;oP I can't wait to see how far apart the votes are for the two.

I agree, indigo. I've got an evil twin shot in the challenge as well, and will be interested to see how it fares.

I've just run through my first round of voting in the challenge and I've gotta tell you...if I see one more pencil shot I'm gonna freak. 8) After obsessing about it all week (and finally uploading something Sunday at 10:30), I'm over pencils. 8)

I think it's funny -- I'm exactly the opposite -- I'm looking forward to shooting still more pencil shots. Granted some of them are similar to what I'm seeing, but I have a bunch of ideas. Some of them I already shot and decided not to submit for a variety of different reasons. Others are just waiting for the right trigger to come out. LONG LIVE PENCILS!!!

It took me all week to come up with me shot and I'm pleased with it. But...I think I'm done with shooting pencils. It took me a while to shoot something where I wasn't sticking a pencil in where it really didn't belong. It's been cool to see other's shots.

I'm still mulling over my voting though. Since so many shots fits the challenge, I'm only voting on style and impact. So, I need to examine shots more closely to fairly vote on them.

this was my first challenge to enter into. The idea I had was used in different variations too. Mine wasn't as sharp as it could have been, cause I was confused about resizing the picture cause it took away the metadata so I shot my shots in the 640 X 480 mode so I wouldn't have to resize it, but it's not as sharp as I wanted it. Now I know to keep the original and I can shoot at a higher resolution.

im not happy with what I got right now. 3.4 Thats plain pathetic. MY picture is totally original, and NOTHING else on this site looks like MY photo. I mean the title tells everything... I guess people don't know what a mechanical pencil looks like... oh well, time for some ABC blocks...

I'm pretty disappointed in my score so far as well, but I'm definitely happy with my picture, so I don't regret submitting it at all. As for the scoring, I've been really happy with what I've seen so far. Lots of great ideas so far (lots of funny ones, too), and some really great execution. I'm looking forward to finishing voting :)

lol. My sentiments exactly. I started out with 7 but am down to 5.2. I worked this afternoon on a shot of a set dinner place where the food, utensils and wine were all colored pencils but I couldn't get it right. I meant to call it Nouvelle Cuisine. Tore my house apart to find those never used damask napkins, tried various nice tableclothes, cleaned the pretty crystal wine glass, sharpened all those pencils. And I thought heck for myself I never go through that much trouble. So, at 5 pm I rushed into doing something else and simpler. After all that much trouble I felt I just had to submit something. I already sorta saw my new idea elsewhere on the thumbnails.
Okay, back to voting now.

I was really... really... disapointed in the pic that I entered,.. I didnt even shoot anything until 2 hours before the deadline... I really have to stop doing that. Then I had to go out so instead of just forgeting about it and not submiting I sent something in, and the comments are the same that I was saying.....oh well I guess I have to have one really crappy pic to add my dpc collection... The funny part was I saw a similar pic that I shot,.. i guess you can only do so much with a pencil... well any way good luck to all and to all a good night.

Here is what I think is happening. the photos are good, but the subject (pencils) just isn't exciting. I found a few that stood out as definate 10's. And there are some that are simply, pictures of pencils. (and then the occational horse penis. what the??) Anyway, I know my votes will go up when I start my commenting. Getting into the true technical aspect of the photo, like lighting and such rather than "ok, it'a a pencil. woohoo". Don't dispair. I believe the scores will go up when people comment. I started out really happy with my photo, and so far, the voters haven't let me down. (let me say that tomorrow when I have a 2.5 LOL) I personally think that there was alot of creativness in this challenge (and then the occational horse penis) After all, there are only so many things you can creatively do with a pencil. I think everyone did a great job. Good luck!
