The checkbox that states "Yes, this photograph was taken with a digital camera on or between Jan 1 2005 and Jan 15 2005." contradicts the extra rules of the challenge. So technically we cant check that box and we cant submit without all the boxes checked. Obviously it's a special challenge etc etc but it's not nice to agree to something that isnt true :(

Although my best of 2004 have either been entered in challenges, up as a print, or been shown in the forums or in my portfolio, which leaves me with not a whole lot so I guess I wont be submitting anyways :(

*is very happy*

I don't care if I've posted it on the site and but not in a challenge! Finally I can use some of my photos that have been just sitting there neglected because I'm too lazy to enter other contests! Not to mention I haven't participated in a challenge in a loooooooong time and I really really want to!

THANK YOU!!!

Yes - I was just wondering what the protocol was here - I mean, in particular I'm thinking of a thread from a couple of weeks ago in which people posted their ten best photos from the year. I was, unfortunately one of the people posting in that thread, so now pretty much all my best shots have been seen here already.

So either people will be submitting images that aren't, in fact, their best shots or we'll lose anonymity. I mean I can't exactly submit a shot thats been selected by other people as a favourite or whatever.

Anyway, the idea itself is a good one, and I'm definately looking forward to seeing people's best shots of the year. Should be fun.

I tried to put in a date in 2004 just now and it will not even let me do it. It will only accept photos taken in the Jan dates. Can this please be fixed?

Nice free study! Although my best photos are already in my portfolio :-/ so i'm not sure if I'll be submitting.

I was wondering, since people already have the photo ready, why is the submission period 2 weeks long?

As far as I can see there`s nothing in the rules posted for the challenge to prevent you submitting your best NON challenge shot..regardless of the number of times it`s been viewed or favourited..but, like you, I`m a bit confused by this as it definitely breaches anonymity..so I would like to see this point clarified.
I would think that most folks have either submitted their best stuff to a challenge or at least displayed it in their portfolio..so if you can`t then submit it to this challenge...then what you are left with to submit hardly comes into "Your best shot of 2004" category.

Usually when verification of the challenge date is requested for a challenge I have kept the picture in the camera and downloaded it directly in order to have the exact EXIF data. I store the pictures in my computer or on disks in either TIF or JPEG format. Will these stored images have the necessary data imbedded in to picture to verify that the picture was taken in 2004 so that my entry will not be DQ'd?

Screw anonythingy. Who cares if people have seen some shots before? It's a Best Of compilation for frakks sake! Would you expect to find 20 previously unheard tracks on a Best of Bintey Spears compilation?

Nicotine-starvation induced madness aside, I think that if you don't do anything to bring attention your entry over the next few weeks then you are within the spirit of the rules. Go for it!

Are they the original, unaltered files, copied straight from the camera?
If so you're okay. If not there may be problems.

Spot on... clarification would be nice. I have a couple of my favourite shots that havent seen the light of day - but I think my very favourite shots have now appeared on this site. So SC clarification of some kind would be great. I'm not massively worried about a lack of anonymity affecting my score - I don't think I've been around long enough to rub too many people the wrong way :), but it does seem odd submitting something that people have seen/commented on/or even marked as a favourite. On the other hand, it's a great way of seeing how an image you didn't get to submit to a challenge would be numerically rated by other people.

Ok, So as long as they are the original unaltered pictures I am OK. Thank you for the clarification.

I have entered my best of 2004 and just used the January 1st date on the entry page as the date the picture was taken. I figured that if questioned the actual date of 2004 of the picture will be imbedded in the EXIF data on the original picture.

Some people have taken tens of thousands of photos this year. We thought it might take them some time to look through them all and narrow them down to the best photo.

This 'anonymous' thing needs to be answered pretty quicky, because it leaves us with only two options: 1) submitting the best unseen stuff (which is probably not going to be as good as our best portfolio stuff), or, 2) dumping our portfolios in hopes viewers will forget what their favorites were.

Edit: Grammar

As long as the photo was not entered into a challenge and was taken in 2004, you can enter it. I think bod puts it down perfectly when he said this:

I have done the same now

If you alread have the photo in your port then you can always hide it there so it won't to easily see.
I just cleaned up my port a few weeks ago and the photo I think I'll enter is no longer there.
But, of course, now we have 25 MB port :) Yeeee-haaaaa

This is tricky - if my best photo of '04 gets a low score, what does it say about my photographic skills?

I picked one I like. I hope it does well. Whether it is my best or not is a matter of opinion.

One of my best of 2004 that was not entered into a challenge has around 60-odd favorites. The majority of people would know it was my image. I guess two years of being at DPC has conditioned me to think that entering that image would be 'bad form'. Plus there is the whole thing where a voter knows who the image belongs to and votes them down just because they dont like the person etc. Not fun :(
