I just purchased a new D70 today. I was not sure if should have spent an extra 100.00 for a 3 yr warranty. Should I cover it under my home owners insurance?
What are anyones feelings on this? I have 30 days to get it if I change my mind. I am moving up from a Nikon 4300.
Happy New year!

Hi-ho,

For the warranty... Personally I'd be getting the warranty extension, I purchaed a 5yr one with my 20D..

As for insurance, I'd say you do want to have it covered for loss/theft and accidental damage.. Check with your insurance company, as it may already be covered.

In my case I had to 'specify' it as it's more than the allowance under the policy for camera gear. My policy had an allowance for only $2000(NZ) worth of camera gear built in. Adding all of the gear (flash + 3xlenses + 20D + battery grip) to the home insurance only cost $5NZ a month. Well worth if it I drop the thing off a building! I imagine US insurance costs are comparable?

BTW, I'm a big fan of accidental damage insurance of camera gear, I broke a Zuiko 180mm F/2 prime lens a few years back, and it would have been horrid if I didn't get it replaced by insurance! (20ft drop onto a shingle road..)

Just my 2c worth... :-)

I got the warranty from wolf camera so I could put my finger through the sensor and they'd replace it.. I never would have bought the extended warranty on anything..... Until I spent a grand on my camera minus lenses. Now I have those warranties on all my equipment. Everything from the camera to the speed light to any new lenses.. THis makes for alot less stress when shooting in dangerous (EQ wise) situations. I.E. concerts, beaches. It's like having a new camera at home!

Warrenty extensions are really useless unless they cover you damaging the camera. I mean if you aren't allowed to drop the darned thing 10 feet and bring it back in for repair, it's useless.

Warrenty extensions in the US generally only cover parts and labor. They don't cover water damange, my two year old decided to play football with my 70-200 L glass damang, or &%(&*%*$ I left my camera bag on the top of my car damage.

Read carefully. Stay clear from places with more fine print than your car loan. :)

That would be what insurance is for...

Warranty(and extensions thereof) cover stuff that could (vaguely) be considered to be a failiure of the camera, not the owner. Your insurance covers failures of the owner.

Tell me, do you really want to make a claim on your homeowner's for damage to your lens? Not a particularly good thing to do in about 80% of the situations out there. :) Any worthwile damage protection plan also includes warrenty related failures.

People tend to purchase warrenty extensions and think it's going to cover impact damage, water damage. etc.

That would depend entirely on the lens... The 24-70 F/2.L is $2900 NZ, and if I comletely stuffed one, I'd certaily be claiming it, it's worth more than my camera. The 90-300 USM on the other hand would go in the rubbish bin, or I'd use it as a book-end. The warranty extension I purchased covers the camera, kit lens and flash for 'faults of manufacture or components' or something along those lines.. It excludes me dropping them, or taking them for a swim.

Having said that, my gear is not strictly on my home insurance. They are specified items on the same policy, but the terms for the specified items (Camera, 580ex, grip, 3x lenses) are subtly different to cover 'acts of stupidity' on my part! So if I so chose I can drive over my entire camera bag, and not worry tooo much...

Cheers, Chris H.

Also make sure you understand what the manufacturer's warranty covers in your country. It does actually vary in different parts of the world.
