Don't get me wrong with this thread but it's just goign through my mind, why do we need to go back to older challenges. People give so many good challenge suggestions and it seems like we are going throught old challenge topics whys that?
It would be more interisting new things, is it just me or what?
Again don't get me wrong it's just a question.
The mechanics challenge seems like the low tech, now the waldo II, b&w II was just around the curve.

I agree there's a whole world out there...why do the same thing over again? DPC is about being creative, I think the topics need to be a little more creative too.

Maybe we need retro challenges in addition to new challenges so we can try to please everyone;)

I think its fun revisiting previous challenges, it challenges you to be more creative...

more creative... so why have a challenge suggestion?
Lots of people give great ideias for challenges can't you be more creative on the new challenges?
I think what happens is that more and more the photos will become more alike.

I wish we did them less frequently.

Remember the Album Cover challenge?

How about a MOVIE POSTER challenge. Make a picture which would be a poster for your favourite movie.

I like revisiting challenges such as "Black and White", "Candid", or whatever else that is relatively general. A Still Life revisit could be in order (but no time soon, seeing how we've been doing Deja Vu, Christmas Decorations, Candid II, Where's Waldo II... all essentially revisits!). Some challenges lend themselves to revisits, while others I'm not so sure about. But, (just to reiterate what everyone else seems to be saying) let's spread them out more!

edit: Movie Posters has been done before. not to say that we shouldn't do it, but just fyi.

maybe we need a biweekly or monthly additional challenge for revisits like these. but, i suppose if all of these ideas were honored, we'd have 10 challenges a week and everyone would have a ribbon! (hey, maybe that's how i can get one!)

I don't mind the classics, such as portraits or nude or black and white because no matter how many times you have theose challenges they will be different. But I think there are other challnges taht we don't need to see a million times.

Challenge revisits are like movie sequels, you always want to see what the director and actors can come up with. I don't mind revisits as long as they are good challenges, like B&W, Portraits, Perspective, etc. Also, some people have more than one idea for a challenge, so its good to try them out in a revisit.

but since there are so many new ideias way not leave the revisited challenges for a while long?
Why not try the new ideias people come with.
That can me a new way to give some people chances on ribboning or not.
Maybe a a revisited challenge in long periods of time would be nicer like people say.
Don't know, again just an ideia.

like everything else in life there are always opposing views.

Personally, like many of you I prefer new ground.

Yet, the Hollywood sequels continue. I had enough after the original.

Then there is the other group that loves returning.

That leaves me no choice but to go with the flow.

It can be argued that there is no need for repeats since there is so much new avenues to explore. Then there are those who prefer the tested grounds.

I give up. Just post the assignment.

So there's been 18 repeated topics in some 250 or so challenges? That's less than 10%. Any idea how many thousands of people have registered with DPC since some of those challenges were initially run?

My guess is that for well over half the participants it was their first opportunity to attempt that topic, and not a "repeat" at all.

I don't think there needs to be any real limit on the "technique-based" challenges like B&W or Macro.

GeneralE you make a good point when you look at that way. 42 related challenges and still that’s not a lot when you look at the total challenges, which is 287.

Some of these topics are so general that they bear repeated visits. B/W, obviously. No thematic limits there, just a technique that must be used. Ditto night shots. Ditto candids, textures, colors, shadows; these are all parts of the photographer's arsenal that need to be practiced and mastered.

Also, I'm new here. I haven't had a chance to participate in ANY of those. I'm glad the site won't lock me out of ever getting a chance to do some of the things I do best, just because they've been done before.

So, I'd say a regular rota of revisited topics is a good thing. Which ones they should be, well, I don't know. But the ones mentioned above for sure, plus landscape/seascape and portrait topics.
