I am attending the North American Nature Photographers Association summit in Charlotte in January, and was wondering about any possible good shooting sites in the area. I know about the raptor center, but what else is out there?

Where is your summit being held?

Rhonda,

Not sure if your interests go beyond nature, but Ive always found Charlotte a cool city. While the downtown is clearly all new and redeveloped, you dont have to venture far to be in a sort of urban timewarp with buildings dating to the 50's and earlier... a sort of "old south". Theres lots of good material in that genre.

Don't forget to enjoy a hush puppie while you are there

I am envious - I wish I could go but time and $$$ are a little short after Christmas.

I thought the NC Zoo over in Asheboro was great, and had a lot of photo ops. It's about 90 minutes from Charlotte, though - not sure if you were willing to go that far from home base.

Yes, rich, it is kind of expensive. However, a friend of mine from our photo club is going, and he pointed out to me that this is a good way to meet other people who live in areas that I am interested in visiting....they know the places to go, and you don't have to go with an expensive tour group. Plus the lectures look interesting. This trip is an early birthday present to myself. Next year I want to go photograph wild horses in Wyoming. I need to work some overtime I think. :)
