To each his own, eh?

You are really right...must be somone who votet without watching the picture....or it was very simple an idiot who done this. I cannot accept this ideea too...shame on them...

I didn't vote this week, but I have to say... it's a stunning photo that I would have given high marks to. But being a vegan and being absolutely sickened at the sight of raw egg, it's difficult for me to look at the front page of DPC this week.

There are always bizarre results and votes aren't there? I can't believe it either - but then three people gave my shot a 1 and for the life of me I can't see it being as poor as those lego shots. Whatever.

I wonder what the reaction would be if each week we had a 'I can't believe someone gives 10 for that!' It would be great - we could pick the bottom 3 pictures in each challenge and start threads bemoaning the fact that some idiots chose to vote differently from the majority and gave votes over 3.

actually, just had a look at the last picture in the egg challenge - 84 '1' votes and 1 10 - yet up until now nobody seems to have been complaining - how could such a terrible voting mistake be missed ?

People vote differently. Different things have an emotional pull on different people. Trees and green fields might have a much stronger influence on someone stuck in a city, in the grip of winter than to someone who lives in that landscape all the time. Feel free to liberally apply mark-up tags to this post, where you feel it is appropriate.

Actually 5 people gave it a 3 and 10 people gave it a 4.

Obviously it's inevitable that people's likes/dislikes and opinions, and preferences vary: however i do think there ought to be room for some technical appreciation here also. To get a 3 or less from me requires major problems to be evident with the shot - those that are hugely over-exposed, out of focus, etc.

I'm ambivalent about the marks out of ten thing actually: I think I'd rather vote for my top five (or ten, say) shots, in order. (edit)I'm sure that must have been suggested before(/edit) But then, this isn't *my* site, and I'm quite happy to go with the flow. Just wish I understood people a bit more sometimes.

I suppose that another problem is that people who are new to photography may find it difficult to critique someone elses work. I have only started using the site last week and posted my first photograph this week and I noticed that my marks were mainly lower than the norm (I certainly wasn't the one who voted three for this photo though!) Critiquing and voting is not really a job for the novice, but we must try to participate as much as we can. Experience should make our comments and votes more meaningful, but remember that the inexperienced may be very wayward in their votes and comments until experience is gained.

Do you think it was worth 22 10's??? I think of a 10 as the king of the crop, that nothing can be done to make the image better. I have given 3 10's in all the voting I have done. This image is a little soft. I would have taken a point off just for that. Infact everything at water (?) level is soft. Just a close macro/DOF issue but still I think it should be in focus. The reflections are distracting also. Just my opinion.

There is alway the contrary argument. I think the 22 10's are just as bad as the 5 3's. If you are going to argue one, you have to argue the others.

Art is in the eye of the beholder. You might like Van Gogh to me it looks like 5 year olds finger painting...

Dave

PS - June I think your shot was great and deserved the win but just like ANY image, if you look hard enough there are flaws.

I wouldn’t have given this picture a 3 at all. I would have probably given it a 5 or maybe a 6. For me below a 5 means that there is some technical problem (out of focus, poor exposure…). Beyond that I go by content and how the picture makes me “feel.” Honestly I think this picture is technically a 10 all the way but I find it boring. That’s just my personal taste. Furthermore, I thought my picture for the egg challenge was my worst effort ever. I pretty much entered it so I could have something in the challenge. I thought it was completely boring and was totally dissatisfied with it. I would have given it a 5 tops, certainly not anything higher than that, but somehow I got four 10’s. I really liked my picture for the technology challenge bit it did awful, by far my worst performance to date. I gave up on trying to find reason for the way the scores come out. I guess it is just personal taste, and for me that is next to impossible to predict.

Uhmm.. I am sorry, but I have to admit that I think calling someone an idiot is a bit harsh. They probably had their reasons for voting a 3 anyway. "idiot" is a word that technically means someone who has an IQ of less than 50 (or is it 60).

It's pretty rare that a photo doesn't get 1's and it's even more rare that a photo doesn't get a 2 and now your complaining about 3's?
Come on, give me a break please!
What are you gonna complain about next time? About the voters that gave the winning photo only a 9?

(BTW: I think the photo deserved to win)

Ditto to what Remie said :) I think that 10 should be the only vote choice. That way, no one has to feel bad :)

LOL John, but maybe a 10 minus should be allowed for the trolls though.
Happy Birthday :)

Good news, I got a 67th out of 74 entries with an average of 4.36 in the member challenge, but did not recieve a single 1. :)

[very small font]It did get 6 2's and 11 3's......[/vsmf]

It's a nice picture, but I'm surprised that it won. It doesn't do much for me, but obvious it must for some people! :)

Why would this be a winning picture? The colours? The bubbles? There's really nothing pulling me to it.

I agree with Remie as well. Complaining about 3's is just crazy! I personally gave the photo a 10. To me that doesn't mean it relates on the same level as 10's in other challenges. I make sure to give at least 1 10 to my favorite photo in a challenge. If I can't decide I give a few. Each challenge is seperate in my mind. The photo in question was good but it didn't really do a lot for me. Still, it's not their fault they had to take a picture of an egg. I really liked my picture for the challenge (for a picture of an egg of course, which I thought I would never ever take) and it did very poorly. I don't mind. It's fun. I just wish I was a member now so I could post some of my good pictures to my portfolio.

sometimes I like really wierd things and give photos that end up at the bottom a really high score. What's wrong with that? It also works both ways.

How many voting methods are used out there? I agree that each challenge is a separate competition. I like to give only one "10" (or more if I just can't decide). I go through all of the full sized images rather quickly on a "first pass" and vote without thinking about it too much and using "5" for a technically good average photo baseline. Then I go back to each score group and make adjustments up or down comparing each image to the others in that score group. I like to wait a day or two and go back and review again in detail making more adjustments. While it is impossible to comment on all images, I try to comment on the ones I rate above 6 or 7. Maybe I'm too picky because I always end up with many more 1's, 2's, and 3's than I do 8's, 9's, and 10's. This is the way I PREFER to do it when I have the time.

FWIW, there is a comment for that pic, "good work", by someone with the same camera. Might have been a bias and/or sympathy vote. Not sure how you could stop that, without limiting judges based on....? An unfortunate danger in an open competition.

Or it could be that someone actually likes the shot ? It doesn't have to be a 'mistake' or an aberant vote, just the same as with votes of 3 on the winning picture - I can well believe someone didn't find it very appealing. What's next - complaints that someone voted a 4 ? 5 ? Just because people happen to have a different perspective or opinion doesn't make them wrong or idiots....

Sometimes uncomplicated lines and colours is all you need. In this case, a nice harmony between the round shapes within the composition and the complimentary colours are what works!

Its the one dimensionality of it that plays very well here at DPC. Its just the very best of that sort of photo, the 'Yellow Submarine' of photography.
