Are there any places in or near Los Angeles that would be great places to take interesting photos?

Your talk'n a really big area here, can you be more specific? You want ideas for the coastal areas or inland? How far are you willing to drive?

Coastal areas let's say between Venice Beach to Leo Carillo all the way inland to Los Angeles Downtown up to Santa Clarita :)

I live in Santa Clarita.

Feel free to join us. Next week I am planning to spend the day travelling the area on the metro and taking pictures...another good option.

As for specific locations, it really depends on what you want to shoot. Locally, there's the Sepulveda Recreation Area, which has such attractions as the Japanese Gardens, Lake Balboa Park (Heron and Egrets), The RC (Radio Control) flying field, and various sports fields.

Most areas along the coast provide scenic good photo ops. If you want more people oriented areas, Venice and Santa Monica are also good.

Downtown L.A. also provides some excellent opportunities, including Olvera Street, Union Station, MOCA and various districts throughout the city.

In the end, it really depends on the type of shooting you want to do. If you want to join us for our January GTG, that would be great. If you are interested in joining me next week wandering the city by metro, let me know.

Thanks for the detailed response. Where does the metro go? I've never been on it before. Does it make a lot of stops and you get off and take pictures in a certain area and then catch it again and go to another spot and take pictures, and so fourth?

There are several lines that cover much of Los Angeles, including downtown, north hollywood, hollywood, long beach and pasadena. I'm planning on picking up a day pass (around $3) which lets you ride all day, and just going around from place to place. Some of the stations themselves make for good photo ops as well. The nearest place to pick up the metro to you would be the North Hollywood Station, which then heads down through Universal City, Hollywood and Downtown (Union Station). From there, you can grab any of the several lines going to other locations.

If you're interested in trying it with me next week, let me know. Hopefully, we can get a number of people to go as well.

Are you talking about Jan 8th? I might be interested in checking that out... Do you bring a tripod with you? I'd sure like to find a backpack for my camera... My case is getting heavy with lens... haha

Actually, I was talking about one day next week... the 27th, 28th or 29th of December. Check the other thread... I posted there about it.

Oh, I work M-F and am not taking any time off during that week... Maybe in Jan sometime. I have weekends off though :)

No problem... I happen to be off that week. I'm always looking for someone to go shooting with so feel free to pm me if you need someone to shoot with. Locally, Balboa Lake is pretty good if you want to try birds.

It would be cool to shoot with other people too... I try to get my wife to go but she doesn't seem too interested in photography (yet). I've taken pictures of birds out at balboa park (you can see in my portfolio) but I want to try structures and L.A. downtown (where it's safe to walk the streets)...

I gave up on trying to get the wife interested in photography long ago! Anyway, if you want to try downtown some weekend, let me know, I'm up for it. In the meantime, try and join us for our January GTG!
