I know that this kind of comparison is a bit silly, but given that both cameras are a pretty good price on ebay these days what do you think? I'm especially intereted in the D30, as though it's 'only 3 megapixels' I wonder how much that resolution difference matters. The image quality still seems amazing and I'll never print above A4 size anyway. Any d30 owners out there?
I'd rather have an SLR but if the quality of the sony's images is better then that combined with the lower price and small size could push me towards that. |

I own the V1 and have shot with a friends D30. Hands down without a doubt go with the D30. Pick up a Canon 50mm 1.8 II for about $75 US and you're up and operational.

The D30 has all the professional manual/custom features, but at the end of the day it's more down to the quality of the lenses you have or intend to purchase. I have found that cheap Cosina lenses produce excellent results with sharp well defined pictures whereas Tamron are to be avoided (I have had 2 Tamron lenses and both produce soft even blurry images).
The D-30 is excellent for taking manual photographs e.g. macro shots after a little experimentation with settings, aperture etc. The automatic routines I am not so impressed with, and if you tend to rely on autofocus a lot then you will find it rather clumsy and slow.
Overall for my own uses I would recommend the D-30 just from a standpoint of flexibility; 3 megapixels produces a fair sized image and the quality is very film-like (it will also force you not be lazy and learn some filmcraft to get the best results). |

that's more or less what I was thinking. The V1 might be easier but it would be a slightly lazy choice. Well I'd better start saving to make up the difference(In the UK everything is unfairly expensive) boo hoo.
I've looked at the D30 galleries and nice as it might be to have a rebel or D70 the quality is still stunning. |
