Ok ...
not much thought have gone on this, so I wish everyone to add on and adjust my idea or tell me if im lossing my mind :p

being many great photographers on this site, I devised two ways in which we can give them greater reconginition (& something else to aim for!)

Platinum Ribbon
This idea would allow 3 more ribbons to be introduced on the site
- awarded to a select few on this site who have consistantly proven themselves/consistently winning ribbons

The Structure
5 Blue = 1 Blue Platinum
5 Red = 1 Red Platinum
5 Yellow = 1 Yellow Platinum

- There are people on this site who would be eligiable for these
- Would be located in there profile under awards

Hall of Fame
I think if u reach Platinum level u should also be placed within the hall of fame for all to see
- Would be located in Community dropdown

please tell me if u like or dislike this idea and ways in which would make it a more feasible idea?

The biggest problem I see with this is that a user who gets 5 yellow ribbons gets a yellow platinum, and one with 4 blues and a red gets nothing.

Any suggestions on how to fix that?

maybe have a normal platinum
5 Blue = 1 Blue Platinum
5 Red = 1 Red Platinum
5 Yellow = 1 Yellow Platinum
5 Ribbons = 1 Silver Platinum (normal platinum)

then when u reach 5 of the same u gain the higher Platinum

crabappl3 would have

2 Silver Platnium
1 Blue platnium

maybe give normal platnium a colour or just silver
- im not sure how the awards would look any ideas?
- need to keep the colour just an unique design

I think the people with millions of ribbons already have enough to show for it and don't need extra ones just to increase their total :P
12/21/2004 04:12:52 AM · #8
I don't see why ribbon winners that consistent would need anymore recognition. What's the point? All it does is clutter the site up with some other un-needed crap and graphics. K.I.S.S.

Gotta add a brown platinum ribbon.

I don't mind the HOF idea though.
12/21/2004 05:45:46 AM · #11
In effect, this already happens really. Those with that many ribbons already get more image views, profile views, favourites selected, etc. There's the top favourite photographers list, the top favourite photo page. Recognition already increases with numbers of ribbons won, and I can't see that adding more ribbons wouldn't be tautologous.

It’s not about the photographer as much it’s about his or her work. Therefore I purpose a yearly DPChallenge Hall of Fame for three pictures. At the end of every year DCP will nominate X number of photographs and members will vote on which three will be inducted into the DPChallenge Hall of Fame . What do you think about that?
How would it feel to you as a photographer to see your work inducted into the hall of fame when there will be only three a year to receive that honor?
12/21/2004 07:21:53 AM · #13
The main idea behind the platnium awards is too have a higher award to aim for (once you win a blue you have reached the highest level here) a platnium level (5 or more awards) would keep talented photographers striving for more

for following the kiss principle (keep it simple stupid) - I don't think this idea would add much more complexity to the site and im sure theres other ways in which the awards can be presented to reduce crowding, not that I think there be much complaining to having a few more awards in the profile :)

SDW65 idea of Hall of Fame is a good idea (added to mine)
so u have

a) Hall of Fame - Photographers
b) Hall of Fame - Photographs

Not for or against this just yet but here's a thought..

For every photographer inducted into the Hall of Fame...i feel there should be one of those interviews about them if there has not already been.

That's the hardest I can think this morning...

See ya!

If you wanted to have a fairer implementation of the Platinum Ribon concept, you could use a point system in which the Blue Ribbon gets (for example) 5 points, the Red Ribbon gets 3 points and the Yellow Ribbon gets 1 point. In this manner, better performance is rewarded more richly.

Racing organizations use a similar system. I used to road race motorcycles, and one of the organizations paid points using this type of "curve" all the way down to 20th place.

I personally don't think you need to add any more ribbons. I do like the hall of fame concept. Why not, after getting "so many" ribbon points (to weight the colors differently, add their profile image, and their winning photos, to a special "gallery" on the site, showing profiles of "Hall of Famers". The gallery could be accessed from the "Community" menu.

(This may be equivalent to ideas below, just skimmed the ideas and thought I'd add my own 2 cents.)

Or it could simply be "transitory". Photographer of the year type thing, for the one who earns the most ribbon points in a year.

Then keep track of those in a special gallery as described above.

And give them free membership for life ;)

Hall of fame idea sounds great, yearly inductions for photographs and phtographers...

Platinum ribbons are unneccessary imo.

Perhaps there should be a points system of some kind.

Blue = 3 points
Red = 2 points
Yellow = 1 point

10 points could be a yellow platinum
20 points a red platinum
30 points a blue platinum

Or a variation on the theme :)

I think the hall of fame idea would be excellent, especially in demonstrating to the public what types of photographs DPC has hidden in it's depths, could increase the number of people wanting to join and pay money to do so :-)

I think people are right about the platinum ribbons, it basically becomes a counting system so everyone knows how many ribbons they have when they can already do that (if that is what they wanna do) by counting their ribbons.

Thanks for the replys and I like the way everyone is thinking ...
- The Platnium Level as a way to get into the Hall of Fame but without the need of more visible ribbons in the profile

* Platnium Level(Hall of Fame)
= 5 or more Ribbon or
= Accumalated Points
---------------------------------------
Blue = 5 points
Red = 3 points
Yellow = 1 point

10 points a Yellow platinum
20 points a Red platinum
30 points a Blue platinum
---------------------------------------
once you reach 10 u gain access to the Hall of Fame and I think have a colour marker next to your name in the Hall of Fame to specify what platinum level you are at or display the points you've gained

The Hall of Fame would have it benifits such as:
* Personal Interview
* Lifetime Membership :) or other benifits
* More Exposer for Prints
* The Feeling of Reaching the exclusive Hall of Fame

- The Hall of Fame Pictures idea is not yet totally decided on, so more input in that would be appreciated, SDW65 post is the current idea so if you have anything to change or add ... please do!
- Anymore things to add? or change in the ideas? all input is greatly appreciated. Thankyou

I don't think it should be called a "Hall of Fame" if it's based on points or ribbons or whatever. In every other "sport" (except, I think, the LPGA), players are nominated by a committee (usually made up of existing members) and then voted on by the "eligible" membership. It is usually based on the nominee's overall contribution, and not merely on statistical success.

If you do it based on points or whatever, just have a page listing "Highest-scoring Photographers" or something, but reserve any "Hall of Fame" for a more select group.

I think the same should apply to photos ... maybe pick nominee's from those with most "favorite" designations, or allow nomination by petition (for example, if 20 people say let's vote on it, then it gets on the "ballot").

I don't think we need more ribbons or anything ...

I'm afraid to say that you've made a mistake with my points total there. Much as I'd lik to beable to claim more "success" than Brad, Setz, Bobster et al in fact I score 19 points. The background database still thinks I have four blues, whereas I actually have three. Nice thoughts though :-)

I remain against this idea, I'm afraid. Those of us with the good fortune, ability, perseverance or whatever the hell it is that gets to those ribbons already get enough exposure compared to those without. There are plenty of ways of finding the shots that the site considers good already. Why do we need more? Is it broke?
