Wow, 91 is %44 of the total images in the challenge (205).

Though about using breeze in mine, but I try to avoid using the title of challenge in the photo.

90 "Untitled" entries is a lot ...

Mine is not a flag, candle, or hair : )

OK - I deserve that.

How about grasses?

Only one "dutch" windmill if I recall...

But yeah, I was disapointed at the redundancy in the selection.

Oh well, it's true that photographying the wind is not easy!

Although I found that the "suggested" wind was more interesting than blurry pictures of moving objects.

What do you think?
12/15/2004 01:07:50 AM · #11
I think wind is obviously a difficult subject to shoot. Those shots that are creatively different from the rest, are not very obviously tied to the challenge theme. So, I think we just have to wade through the redundancy and score them based on their merit rather their repetitiveness. Good luck to all.

My first eight votes averaged less than 3.8! Well, at least it is climbing now. And I do not have any of the below.

What about praire grasses?

i saw like 3 on 1 pg. and there were lots of these shot on other pages 2.

man oh well i'm going to still vote farly i'm just going to judge them vs. each other so that the best 1 IMO will get my highest vote.

Just curious so don't jump down my throat (please). I don't know the history and would like some background. Why do some people get so upset about the challenge word being in the title? I understand that it lacks creativity, but the extreme reaction puzzles me. Any takers?

I haven't noticed any extreme reactions... just some observations.

Same answer. I think it is just the creativity issue. Kind of like a particular subject being popular, like the flags, hair and grasses here. In the end people vote for these images regadless and if it is good shot it scores well. But it does give us something to talk about while we vote and await the final scores.

Okay (jeez), fair enough. Does it impact the scoring? Is it a certain bias by a small group? Is it the overall feeling of most members? At some sites it would be a non-issue. Is it really an issue, or just conversation?

good point.
however, if there are many shots of the same I get tired of them and the vote starts to slide down. I try to go back and vote the rest down as well. But anyhow the order of pics is random so nobody sees all the images in the same order

I'll add my two cents about titles...

I don't normally complain much about titles other than to myself. I do make comments about titles when I see a GREAT photo with a really poor title. Titles are as subjective as the photos they are attached to though. The title IS part of the entire presentation when I look at a photo. A poor title can hurt my own view of a photo. However, if the photo looks like the photographer didn't really care to start with, the title doesn't matter.

I think I have been taking the conversation in the forums too seriously, reading too much into things in an effort to get a feel for the place. jbsmithana, I appreaciate your answer. It is actually very helpful.

With so many (in this case) flag shots, it is going to get to the point where I just don't want to see another flag. Without much intention on my part, the appeal of those images is going to wane, and thus, the scores.
12/15/2004 01:36:00 AM · #22
Thanks, that's what I needed. I agree with the whole "too many" images. I do score a creative take on the challenge, as long as it still fits the challenge, much higher. You're right, the title does impact me in that way. A really bad title does make me cringe. I just really never thought about the word from the challenge as negative as long as the shot and the other words in the title work. Something to think about.

then again, if you have the challenge subject (ie wind) in your title, it kinda gives the impression that you weren't sure it fits and are trying to shoehorn it in. I have a tendency to have VERY long titles on my entries but I'm getting better at it. For me, the title is an integrated part of the image, so it must work with it NOT against. I have voted down because of bad titles and up for good.

I try really hard to not use the challenge topic directly in my title. Gotta admit, though, this time it was really hard. I almost gave in and went with "Blown", but finally came up with something a little more abstract.

This is why I don’t like threads like this while voting is going on. Someone reads it and thinks they should vote a particular picture or set of picture's down because after reading, they think everyone else is. YES I have a flag photograph and it is [ or was] doing pretty good. I knew there would be no ribbon for this photo [or even near a ribbon]. But my point is I just updated and received a 1 vote. But as always NO comment on why they choose to give it a one. And to the person that gave it a 1, how about a comment? See some of us don’t have the luxury of sharing our photographs with others here at this site before submitting so we don’t’ know how many of one particular thing will be submitted. Now that one vote could be a ‘troll voter’ or could it have been obscured because of a thread such as this? Think about it.
I can’t tell you how may times I have seen that Rock off the Oregon cost and I have never been there but I can close my eyes and see it as if it was in my back yard, but I never vote it down because of frequency. Just had to vent…. Sorry.

NOTE: my reference to the Oregon rock is just that a reference. I think Zoomdak has taken a few pictures of it and they are all good to great shots and one has won a ribbon [Congrat's]. I was just pointing out that a good picture that has been seen a lot does not have to be voted all the wayyyyyyyy down.
