Now that comments and optionally be hidden until voting has been completed, how about another option to "unhide" scores? That is, each user can elect to show the actual score given on an image after the voting has closed. Many (well a few) usually add their score to their comments - this would make it easier for them. If the score is shown, it would also tie comments to scores - and could allow more discussion between score givers and receivers.

I usually tell the person at the end of the comment what I left.

Not opposed to the idea, as long as it is not mandatory, but wouldn't the above mentioned discussion be more about scores than about the merits of the image?

I am all for generating a dialog about the image, but the current system of leaving comments does not make that possible. Several issues contribute to this; 1) the owner of the image must go and look to see if comments are made, 2) the commenter has to go keep checking back to see if the photographer has posted a response to the comment and 3) others will likely not get involved in any discussion that happens to surpass the first too.

Of the benefits you mentions, the above seems to be the most important; but I apologize if this takes the discussion in a direction you were not intending.
