River at dawn. Sorry my webhost doesn't allow me to post images directly in the forum. :(

This is a "discard" from the many potential "New" compition entry's.
(and is nothing like my actual entry.. no flames, ok?, OK?)

I am trying to improve my croping and spotting skills,
and I find it hard to critique my own work.. Please help!

So far only a minor curves adjustment has been done.
How would you crop this photo and what would you spot edit
(assuming this isn't for DPC) and Why? any other comments
or critiques appreshiated.

Thanks for your time...

I like the photo. i think i would have cropped out a little more on the right. The flash? lights up the first bush/tree a little too much for me. Good otherwise - probably would give 7.
looking again - might not be a flash at all, just the diff. color of that tree. Still would take a little from that side off.
A little off the bottom as well so the buildings dont end up dead center in the photo.

As far as the cropping I think removing some of the foreground like the black part of the river without much reflection and the tree up front that seems to have a flash or some light highlighting it.

Maybe making this a 640x427 or even more extreme panorama shot would give it more drama...highlighting the positives of a nice city shot, the light reflections in the river and the brightening sky.

All the interest in this photo is off in the distance. I think I would have cropped closer in. Other than that it's a nice shot with great sky colouring and atmosphere.

Jeremy,

I like longer exposure shots like this one... I really like the way the exposure length creates a glow with the lights in a still situation. I don't know what resolution this photo was made in, but I wonder if there is enough to crop a rectangle right out of the center of this image... I think this would bring your points of interest in as a larger part of the photo. The shrubery in the lower right corner is lit differently than the rest, which is an eye catcher. I like the feeling of the overall image :)
