Anyone have this lens? What are you feelings about it? I know Rockwell isn't too found of it. Anyone have any suggestions in lieu of this lens? I mainly do landscape and skyline so I need the extra zoom. I have the 18-70 DX and the 24 120 AF-S VR.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I need to find something in the meantime while I save for the 70-200 2.8 VR or the 80-400 VR.

I have the 80-400mm VR and love it.

So, it is my recommendation that you continue saving for this lens instead of compromising with something that you are not keen on purchasing. You will be glad that you did! I also use it with the x2 converter for a focal range of 160-800mm and it is awesome.

I have it and I'm not particularly thrilled. In bright light, it takes a nice, clear pic. Forget about handholding in anything less than standing directly on the surface of the sun. Just too slow. Autofocus is slow to find it's subject too unless there is a lot of light.

But if you shoot from a tripod and don't expect too much from it it's not bad for the money. If you buy it, you'll be wanting more though I think, just like me.

I guess I will save up for a 300mm F/2.8 eventually, then try to convince myself I'm worth it.

I also have the 80-400mm VR and it's awsome! It was a big choice between that lens and the 70-200mm VR but I opted for the longer reach.

My suggestion is to go to a store and try them out.

Here are my experiences...

Both were f/8, 1600 ISO (overcast day)

first shot: 1/800 @ 180mm, i know i could have opened up, but i wasn't thinking.
second shot: 1/640 @ 300mm

The bokeh isn't amazing. the overall lens is decent. It's hard to handhold because of its light weight. Definately a bang for its buck.

The Sigma version of the 70-200mm F2.8 HSm is outstanding. the only thing you don't get is the Vibration Reduction, but for about half the price of either the Nikkor 70-200mm or the Nikkor 80-400mm, it's a very good option. I shot both this lens and the Nikkor with the VR for a week to try them out. I opted for the Nikkor in the end to get the extra stop or two from the VR, but the image quality was identical between it and the Sigma. very very good lenses both.

I was leaning towards the Nikon 80-400 VR. Maybe I will pick one up this month since Nikon is offering the rebate. I can get it here //www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=207360&is=USA for $1329.95 .

He never stated he used the camera or anything. It is a commentary of his opinions based on the camera specifications.

having never used the camera is one thing; not owning it is another. You think every person who has ever reviewed a vehicle owns that vehicle? not likely.
To say that Rockwell shouldnt be taken seriously about lenses is ridiculous. the guy has owned and tested more Nikon lenses than just about anyone out there, and having owned a dozen or so myself in the last year, I can tell you he is bang on on every review I've read. I would and do listen to his lens reviews regularly.
For him to give an opinion of a camera's specifications isn't a crime either, so long as he's only commenting on the specs, not it's performance.

I actually don't give a hoot about his D2X opinion, since this thread was about lenses. Rockwell knows his stuff when it comes to lenses.
