Greetings...

You need to ask for more than just critiques. You need to say: "Pretend this was entered into a challenge and you're commenting on it -- what would you say?"

*wink*

It's not my favorite from the series, John, but I still dig it.

OK, my DPC comment: This is fairly dark and it looks like it's a little bit blown out in the highlights. I think I'd work a bit on the levels adjustment to lighten the shadows and bring a bit more detail into the highlights. Otherwise, a decent transition from tone to tone. I think I'd want to focus on at least the bottom tab a little perhaps to clue in the reader about what the book actually is. Maybe a title would help here too. I'm not sure how I feel about the depth of field. It focuses all the attention on the page, but again, I think I want a little more info thatn this DOF is actually giving me.

OK, out of dpc mode. Would I hang it? Probably, but then I also know what the original looks like and this loses a little in the translation.... I know that this series gave me some ideas for things I'd like to shoot in a simialr vein....

Looks like it was done with "Your Other Camera" ;-) i.e. very old and like a photo from the times where cameras were not so good and produced blurry images. So the photo raised a certain feel in me, which is always a good (in a DPC challenge this fact alone means that my score to the photo would be 6+ i.e. above average).
I know you did the blur on purpose, but I can't see what you wanted to say/show us with that. But the DOF is great for that matter. The subject is not too exciting. I love the lighting.

P.S. Noone who would like to comment on my outtake photo in the "Challenge Results" -> "Something Old Outtakes" ?

Interestingly abstract, which I always find appealing. In a challenge though I would probably give it a 4 or 5.

If you find it interesting, why would you score it average or slightly below in a challenge?

Not enough detail for me, and the highlights are too blown out. What I DO like is it reminds me of my very well used Bible...(come to think of it I shoulda, coulda, woulda used my Bible for the "Something Old" challenge, had I seen this in time.) So I guess in a way this photo inspires me. I wanna run off and do it MY WAY......tehehe
I can appreciate the mystique surrounding this photo but I think it could have been accomplished without the blur.

I believe that this photo would be a completely different image without the blur and it definitely would not have the same impact on me.

If this image was completely focused, I would see a book and nothing more.

It's funny, when John puts these up they usually get positive critiques, but I have a feeling that if this was in the something old challenge it would have gotten many negative comments. Many would complain about the DOF, the lighting, the contrast, etc.
By the way, is it an old dictionary? We had one like it.

That's part of the reason I post these... Most of these images I post are either professional images or high priced prints from somewhere else...

Maybe you should let someone like me post one and see what responses i get. Do you think they would be the same?

It is ONLY interesting and abstract. Both of which I like. Otherwise I find this photo too much out of focus, grainy and poorly aligned, not something I would choose to put on my wall or even in a photo album. If I had taken it I would delete it from the file and forget it.

Should have said it all the first time, huh?

Nothing about it peaks my interest. Instant delete...

There is a definite "style" emerging here... I like all of the photos you've posted to some degree.
The fork, the flower and the book being the three I'm speaking of.

I don't think most people "see" with the same eyes that others who do this type of thing do. DPC's audience is so diverse and mostly stereotyped about what they want to see and what they don't want to see....that I don't think this would do well here. I think to be able to critique...you have to loosen up. And it may help if some of the voters would have a few drinks. :)

This looks like one of those "really good art" shots that's over my head... Doesn't do anything for me, but I certainly wouldn't be suprised to see it in a gallary...

The 'fork' is the only one that was my photo... the flower was a Mapplethorpe...

Well congratulations..the Fork being the "weaker" of the three...but you are definitely seeing things John.

And.....if I may say so...I believe you have the talent and the "eye" to go this route and do well with it.

I will be slipping in some of my own photos occasionally :)

First impression: I can almost 'smell' the old book smell. Since this brings back many good memories (I love book shops) its a very effective picture for me. The lighting also suggests a dimmly light area, perhaps a storage area where you can sometimes make the most interesting finds. The combination of soft textures (the cover - soft/worn, the smooth texture of the paper) gives a nice comfortable 'feel' to the image.

Composition: I like the strong diagonals. I also like the line of tabs blurring into the distance. The barely open cover invites me into the picture. The dappled lighting as I said above evokes the feeling of a discovery or a reminicence.

I think if the DOF was much larger the picture wouldn't evoke as much of the feeling of discovery or memory as it does, as neither of these things should be totally clear.

I like it. I would rate it an 8 or better.

But then..I like a lot of stuff that has blown highlights..dark areas and yet still maintains contrast and definition.

I love it. It makes me want to run my thumb over the edges of those pages and fan them, I'm sure the edges would all be soft. One thing I do from time to time is hand bind books, because I have this thing about them... I often buy books because they look nice or feel nice, and never read them! So I think I react to this photo a bit differently to other people. The photographer has managed to place a lot of emphasis on exactly the things I love about books, especially the textures of an old book. I agree with puppet, I can smell it :)

I have a bunch of old books (see by entry) which I'd love to photograph or scan so I could make facsimiles and read them without wrecking them...maybe the bibliophile sub-group should start listing titles/dates of their favorites...

This reminds me of the times my mom would open her Bible and read it to us kids. I love the photo. Brings back good memories.

John,

I don't like it that much. I wear contactlenses and the focus in this picture reminds how books look to me without corrective lenses. So I guess you can say this photograph does illicit an emotional respose from me.
