I like this new challenge, especially because it will be very easy to tell whether someone has met the criteria of it. If there's a pencil in it, it meets the challenge. No pencil; it didn't meet the requirement. (I'm sure someone will throw a wrench in there somewhere, but this is at least pretty straightforward.)
While voting on "Something New" I felt that a LOT of the images were quite a stretch on the subject, and I docked a number of scores as a result.
How does everyone else deal with voting on photos that seem to stretch the interpretation of the challenge topic? What about photos that wouldn't come close to meeting the challenge without a clever title? As a newcomer to the site I have already found myself struggling with this as I vote.

I can definitely appreciate a photo that has a twist on the challenge interpretation, as long as i can figure out what it is :)

There is a thread from a week or two ago where I asked the same question.
Look through the old forums.It created quite a few different comments.

| I was reading on one of the threads where a member said we are limited to using just one pencil in the picture. Did I read that right? I don't see that just because the project was defined in the singular we are can't use multiple objects. |

Just because it says take your pencil, doesn't mean you can't take your pencil and add it to some other pencils...
That's what I figure anyway and it's what I will be thinking when I vote. |

I have no problem with photos that are "on the fringe" -- but if I think and think and think and still can't figure out why on Earth a particular photo was entered for a particular challenge, then I have problems with it. And I have been running into that quite a bit already. |

| Personally I think the intention of the challenge is that ONE pencil has to be the main subject of the photo. How much clearer can a description be? It says pencil, not pencils. The photo may contain thousand pencils, but still one pencil has to stand out as the main subject. |

Yup, and that is your personal interpretation. It doesn't actually
mean it is right or wrong. It just means that it is your view.
The idea that it has to only be one pencil is most certainly not
spelled out as strongly as you are doing here...
part of the joy of the challenge...
All it has to do is 'physically contain a pencil' and be taken in the
correct time frame. Now we can argue the metaphysical implications of
a digital medium having any physical content rather than just a representation
or embodiment of the original meta-pencil, but that doesn't make it any
more certain.

It may be my personal interpretation, but I think the goal of this weeks challenge was that everybody would use the same subject. And again, despite any meta-blabla, the challenge is pretty clear: pencil, not pencils!
Why make things more difficult then they really are?

| Anyone notice that the current challenge vote has a fantastic shot of some coloured pencils and one sharpened one. Super clear, amazing colour, view, contrast, creativity, simplicity. If only... |

I don't see anything that limits this to one pencil or requires that the pencil the be the only subject of the shot. Granted, a photo of a flower with a blurry pencil in the background wouldn't cut it in my book, but a pen and two pencils would meet the challenge IMHO.

Hmmmmm.....I originally thought only ONE pencil was the idea too. Now though I wonder if there is any difference in adding your pencil to a bunch of other pencils..... or candy canes....... or floating it in swamp water. As long as there is a pencil in there somewhere I'll just vote on the qulaity and WOW!! factor of the photo....
Actually, I'm much clearer on the challenge than I was before...

| You can only have one pencil, if you have more it would be too busy. You know a picture should only have one subject or so they say? |

For clarification... "Your photograph must physically contain a pencil" does not say must contain a single pencil. Do as you like, so long as you've got a pencil in your picture.

One pencil would be your pencil, and the other would be someone else's pencil. Then they could meet and argue about the meaning of pencil life. Or why "pencil" is such a weird looking word. ;-)

I could take my one little pencil and surround it with as many pencils as can fit in the frame....My pencil would still be there...It's where I PUT my pencil. What's the diff if I place it in the refridgerator, blender, or a pencil case with other pencils? Still my pencil. I think we're majoring in the minors here.

Thanks. I now have my idea for this week. Now, if everybody can recognize it after a little action in the blender; or takes my word for it, since I will use the word "pencil" in the title.
