I am planning to get my wife a pocket point and shoot for Christmas. She likes taking pictures but does not like the bulk of our D70. It will be used mostly for party type snapshots. I am looking for a camera with the following options in order of importance:
1. Must fit in a pocket
2. Minimal shutter lag.
3. Ability to shot .RAW file format
4. Uses complact flash memory cards
5. At least 3 megapixels
I have read some reviews on various models but I was hoping to get some real world feedback.
Thanks
Steve

Have you looked at Canon Powershot? Some of them (e.g. S60) have RAW. |

can't recommend this baby enough - will be keeping my S50 for a long time even after i get the dslr. it's a bit large for a pocket shooter, but it's a great simple P&S, that with continuous use you get to learn more about. the new S70 (i think @ 7MP) looks the biz! |

I was going to suggest the S60 or S70 as well. My Dad has an S50 and it's a great little camera.

Check out the Optio line from Pentax. Some of them are very small. I haven't used them but have been impressed with their images that I've seen on the web.

I love my Canon s500 but it will not shoot RAW. It is perfect as a pocket point and shoot though...

Great cameras, but as far as I'm aware don't shoot raw and don't use compact flash. |

If you can give up the RAW, and the CF, try out the SD200. It's under 300, 3.2MP and the thing that sold me was the size. I tried out an Optio at a show(the smallest one) and although it is slightly smaller, it's not as fast(noticeably). The SD200 also has a Canon interface which compared with the 7 or 8 small P&S that I held and took shots with, was only matched by the small Nikon that I tried which has an annoying "ergonomical" buldge along the length of the camera. The SD200 uses SD though and since I already had a bunch of CF cards, I was turned off by this until I saw how cheap SD cards were. Under 350, you get a 3.2, TINY jean pocket size camera with good optics, minimal lag for a P&S, plenty of memory for a 3.2 and a wow factor when people see it. There is 1 downside in that the lens cap which automatically opens and closes does like to collect dust on the lens. This is easily remedied with a lens pen.
