A photo in the B&W II challenge has been disqualified for EXIF falsification, and the user responsible has been suspended from DPC for 45 days. Cheating is not tolerated on this site, and will be acted upon.

glad ya'll are on top of things. does suspended mean they can't log in, or just that they can't submit?
11/19/2004 09:03:15 AM · #3
The user will not be able to log in using their username, and thus will only be able to browse the site as a guest. Of course, we also monitor for multiple accounts, so we will prevent any new users being created by this user.

Why only 45 days Manic? If this was an all out attempt to falsify the EXIF I don't see where this could have been an oversight like forgetting to change the date or something. If it is clearly a cheater, why will they be allowed to come back at all?

This was a first offence - we will only ban a user if they come back after the suspension and reoffend. This way, they have a chance to mend their ways...

Let's hope they don't just mend the way they alter the EXIF. I wish I were a more forgiving person when it comes to things like this.... But, it takes me a little longer I'm afraid. I guess everyone deserves a second chance.

Are we allowed to know who it was? (Or which image was DQ'd)?

I'd like to know which one it was, I think it was one of my 9's

The image in question was called 'Barn'. I don't think it'd be fair to identify the user - if the user comes back after the suspension and identifies themself, that's their choice.

The user would have to connect from the same IP (or IP range), and we monitor this data for multiple accounts - if two users come from the same IP (without good reason, eg office NAT'd firewall), then the admins can act upon it.

So, you can tell if I'm connecting from work or from home.....Don't tell my boss!!!

Unfortunately, if the user is willing to falsify EXIF, s/he is probably also willing to do what is necessary to bypass such measures designed to block multiple accounts... and there's not too much that can be done about it. Only question is whether they have the desire to bypass those controls. And, now, also unfortunately, they know what controls are in place and could, if they wanted, take the steps to bypass them. But, hey, maybe that's just my paranoid side sneaking out.......

the answer to this would be to put their account, unnamed, in a purgatory so that some of the trained eyes around here could be on the lookout for the type of images the offender used to submit...and, some of the forum hounds could also keep an eye out for forum contributions that match their "fingerprints"...

Curious, if the user was Disqualified do you also pull all his votes and comments from the challenge?

I'm just wondering because I had a great comment and a nice HIGH vote and last night it disappeared to my surprise.

But if that's the case, I would rather have the vote/comment pulled anyways.

Great work finding this among 640 entries, it take going to take me a week just to vote on this challenge. But to examine the info on top of that would take a year ;-)

We better send our money into DPC so they don't send any reports to the boss ;-) My 10 bucks is on its way ... don't tell my BOSS ;-)

sounds a bit like (mccarthys?) america in the fifties and sixties - true, "you EXIF fabricator!" has a less dramatic quality than "communist!", but it's the same principal. anyway, we all know cheats have no artistic skill whatsoever. "Barn"? Bor-ring!

Funny--last night I was thinking of proposing a "Weapons of Mass Destruction" challenge topic. Maybe we could find them for the gov. (But most people would just post pics of their children and pets ;)

Hey. I like barns
and no...it wasn't me. It's very unfortunate that someone would go to such measures for a photo challenge.
Now, about bor-ring....what's a thumbtack rate? Higher than a pocketwatch, I guess. :D

No, their votes and comments are not removed, just their image.

Somebody went through last night and removed all of their comments from the active challenges because they received some PM's after they commented. Your missing comment is likely related to that; there are threads talking about the "incident" and an opinion poll has been put up for everyone to vote on.

Just to clarify, I believe you are refering to Senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin, a harshly anti-Comunist inquisitor and accuser who should be associated with the 50's only, not the 60's; as opposed to Senator Eugene McCarthy from Minnesota who ran for President in 1968 losing to Richard Nixon (who was coincidently a sort of mentor, or role model, for Joe, having cut his political teeth by nailing Soviet spy Alger Hess while serving on the infamous House Un-American Activities Committee).
