Maybe this will take your mind off of the "PM" debate-

Let's all rally around the idiot who dropped her camera while the zoom was fully extended. It knocked the housing for the lens completely off. While the zoom mechanism is still working and the camera still takes (blurry) pictures, two different repair stores have told me that it will be over $200 to fix it.

At this point it will be cheaper to buy another S3000 at close-out prices, or maybe move up to a 3100- not sure what I'm going to do because I was laid-off from my job earlier this month, so upgrading at this point is out of the question.

The sun broke out yesterday after two solid days of drizzle, and me without my baby. Waaaaa! Feels like someone cut my arm off. :-(

Anyone have a Nikon D70 they would like to donate? (hee hee)

Thanks for listening.

Go get a free camera at //camera4free.com/ (unparsed on purpose)

It comes with months of torturous waiting, waves of spam and friends that will hate you for referring them.

Seriously...sorry to hear about your loss. I've made it a point in life to wrap my hands twice around a strap before even attempting to lift a camera because I'm so scared of dropping it.

You might be able to still sell it for parts on ebay. All kinds of stuff sells on there.

OK, I guess I will settle for a 20D. Beggars can't be choosers. :-)

(I did get to play with one yesterday at the store. WOW. Probably take me a year to learn how to use it)

I got my S5100 and got laid off (sort of...) a month later... One advice, if you like to do macro, don't get the S5100, it does rather poorly macro shots... Good luck with that!

How about everyone sends eptasdi a dollar - then she can get her camera fixed (or buy a new one!). That would be our good deed for the day! :)

Go for the S7000 :p

Something kind of bad happened to me the other day. I was on the edge of a small cliff which led to this huge rivine which in summer took me and a friend 2 hours to escape from due to it's overgrown...ness. Despite being only 100 metres long.

Anyway as I was putting my stuff away I dropped my polarizing filter/adapter ring and had to watch it bounce noisily down the cliff edge. When I eventually found it however there was not a mark on it thank god, but I still had to once again brave the Valley of Death.

Course it's Autumn now so all the weeds were dead.

Hey I got laid off too! My camera may not be broken but it sucks at macro... I would'nt mind receiving a Canon or a Nikon...

The problem with *THAT* is.. (as tempted as I am).. that once you do it for one person, you'd have no genuine excuse not to do it for *EVERY* person on this site with damaged cameras.. and then we'd all go broke pretty darned fast. lol.

Sorry about your camera eptasdi.. I dropped my HP315 in a river a couple of years ago, and it never worked right again. I know the pain.

Better yet- $10! Or more!

Nah, I'm just kidding about the donations. Santa (Dad) has offered to replace the 3000 (I've seen them as low as $199) but I figure I might as well get a 3100, it's only a little more. Then I found a 7000 for $543 and on and on...I would like to stick with Fuji (for now) because I have the XD cards, don't want to spend more for new memory...

Decisions, decisions.

You'd be SO happy with the S7000 I think.
Man, I wish I could afford xD cards.. they're just so expensive, but they're OH so cute.

Broken cameras are a bummer... last camera, an hp 935, I found my son trying to shove the lense back into the camera. It never worked right and after. When I would start it up, it would sound like a gravel truck on a dirt road.

Sorry for your misfortune.

Yes...I saw that at buy.com and thought, "well, maybe spend just a little more". But there are things like...oh....food, the mortgage, the bills...you know, those pesky things that get in the way of my addiction.

What's this.. "food".? LOL. When I bought my S7000, I went without groceries for almost a month and a half. I ate.. uh.. creatively. (which means I raided any friends and relatives houses I could)

Thanks all. I'm sure everyone has horror stories about broken cameras, thought I'd just share mine. :-)

I will be sure to be more careful in the future!

Sorry to hear your news! What a bummer. I'm another paranoid photographer - until the strap is around my neck or wrapped several times around a wrist I can't relax.

A thought: If you have an annual travel insurance policy it should cover you not only for overseas but for trips within your home country. Even with the excess it might be worth claiming. Alternatively can you claim on your home insurance? Mine covers items such as cameras, jewellery etc outside of the home and for accidental damage too.

Sorry if neither option works for you.

That might be an option (home insurance), checking on that now.

And yes, from now on my camera will be secured to my neck or wrist. Stupid thing, really. I usually do that, but I had just taken it out for a second to snap a shot (not really out shooting, just walking to the store and I carried the thing everywhere with me) and Ooops!, one slip, and down she went.

I can see it going in slow motion to the concrete...the stuff of nightmares.

Don't worry, I totally understand. The slow motion thing happened when I tripped and injured myself a couple of weeks ago! I could see that pavement coming towards me and couldn't get hands down or stop myself. Well the split lip healed, the stitches fell out, the bruising went away and I went back to the dentist for the third (and final) time today and had a crown fixed where I broke a tooth off.

Accidents happen but a few weeks later, with luck and support, we move on again!

Holy frell that's amazing.

eptasdi you have my sympathy. I remember letting go of my old 602 thinking the strap was around my neck ... fortunately it suffered nothing more than a few scratches.

Hey, I'M SYMPATHIZING!!

I broke my camera a month ago...I used it to break my fall, actually.

A nice camera guy tried to make it look like there was no impact damage, so it'd be fixed under warranty...but no go. I just paid half the camera's value to fix it. I'm an idiot, twice over.

But, it doesn't even matter...I feel disgustingly aimless without my camera. Going outside, I have no direction, nowhere to go. Life is dull, miserable, completely devoid of interest...I need my photofixin' and soon!

Damn you, Minolta...Damn you!

spent a week on the canals in London recently and one of my mates had a D'image 7 stolen while we had lunch at a riverside pub. Unfortunately All the memory cards full of the holiday's snaps were in the camera bag which also went walkies.
However this does present an opportunity to move up to a new price-range for the replacement - once permission is gained from the wife of course...

Your homeowners or renters insurance might cover these losses. Try and look into this.
