No problem! It's all downhill from up there....
Know you're way to Route 81?

Just checked on a map. the state of NY is really big. And I didn't realize it was THAT far. I guess it's a better luck next time... :-)

Yes, I am in the Albany/Schenectady/Troy, NY area, just below the Adirondacks.

What was the question again? ;)

You seem to be very spread out! ;O

I think, the question is, without getting into delineations of where "upstate" begins and ends....oh yeah, the question: Who are we? And, do you want to get together some time? Somewhere near "central upstate new york" -- which is more or less not far from Route 81? (and 88) (and Ithaca/Cornell)

My definition of Upstate New York: When asked, "How far is it to ...?" The person responding tells you the distance in miles, without an accent, and gives you three alternative routes. That's when you know you're upstate.

Born and raised in da Bronx, moved to Westchester, then Tannersville/Elka Park/Haines Falls, then Westkill, then Windham, all in the Northern Catskills. Then on to Tahawus/Newcomb in the Adirondacks. Next to Florida then back to NY to Round Top in the Catskills, then Kingston>then Coxsackie both in the Hudson Valley. Now I'm in Florida. I love New York and always will, but my family is here.

I won't be doing any get togethers, but I'm a native upstater. Born & raised in Saratoga (18 yrs);

went to school in Ithaca (4 yrs),
after a time lived in Saratoga again for 2 years

and Plattsburgh for 2 years.

Have been in WV for 10+ years now, though. I miss it (NYS) sometimes!

So it's getting cold upstate - we could either do something soon or do it next spring. So far it's

mavrik
n8trchik
KaDi
nshapiro
ButterflySis

I'm sure we could round up one or two more. CJ likes to travel for these things. Where would we go? What would we do?

How about coming to Buffalo for a Bills game? (...Yeah, right!! ;-)

you'd think i was important by what my schedule looks like ... but if I'm free when you plan something ... I'll show up :)

(of course, being a Jets fan, a Bills game is out of the question ... i'm still a bit bitter)

Don't forget your relatively close neighbors- Ericlimon, KarenB, Soccerdad, Soup, BlindJustice, and myself among others.

hmmph.

Too bad I'm about 3000 miles away. Makes it a bit hard to come visit.

Born in Johnson City, lived in Binghamton area for 21 years. Love the countryside around upstate NY... Not sure when I'll get back tho.

I'm with you on the schedule point, hopper. I think a get-together would be interesting; it all depends on when.

...I'd feel bad about beating the Jets, but if it's any consolation, that's the high point of the season for Buffalo. The Bills & Jets are headed in opposite directions. :-(

This is great to see everyone in nearby towns--unfortunately, I don't really know where they are ;)

So as a means of judging our distance, can we pick a reference point (say, Albany, NY he he he--self-centered) and post what your distance is from there? Roughly, within 10 miles or so.

If you need an address to calculate, go for "51 S Pearl St, Albany, NY 12207-1500 US", this is the Albany Pepsi Arena (right next to the empire state plaza (downtown Albany)

For me, downtown albany reads 20 miles away on Mapquest.

Ok, that was self centered. So pick another central location and we will all map to it.

For me, Albany would be about a 4 hour drive. I'm in Webster, which is a suburb of Rochester right on the southern shore of Lake Ontario (literally 5 minute walk from my door to water).

I think Albany would be pushing it for me under my current schedule since just the round trip driving would burn a day. I'd consider a drive for Buffalo, Syracuse, and possibly parts of the Southern Tier.

I'd love to join up with folks to shoot at Letchworth State Park - the Grand Canyon of the East. I've also been thinking about a trip to the Montezuma refuge, but I'm not sure when is seasonally ideal for that location. I desperately wanted to hit Watkins Glen, but ran out of time - I think it's closed for the seaon now.

NY is so big that I think you'd need to break it into Western, Central/Northern, and NYC to get people within reasonable drives and still have time for photography and beer.

C.G. just gave me an idea. I was just asking distance to Albany as a reference.

New proposal: Post links to where people want to meet, and what season. Then we'll have a smorgasboard to pick GTG's from.

Hint: Post links to info about the places you mention so we lazy folks don't have to search.

It doesn't have to be in the "near" future. Propose Spring, Summer, Fall. Oh yea, winter too ;)

if i get stuck in traffic, the pepsi arena is about 6 minutes away

can we find something closer?

just kiddin ... i'd be willing to drive a couple hours or so, but like i said, clearing my calendar may kill it for me :(

219.67 miles or 3hrs27 mins from the Albany Pepsi Arena

How about this approach... Looking at the county map it seems that Western NY could fit (if rotated) across eastern NY. Let's call it two areas:

(1) Western NY: Chautauqua-Allegany, Niagara, Finger Lakes, some of Thousand Islands
(2) Upstate NY: Everything esle *except* NYC, which is it's own state ;)

I think you can just about reach anywhere within those divisions in a reasonable day trip.

Also about 5 minutes from the pepsi... If I'm not working, I'd like to come too, but scedules kill me.

Letchworth State Park. ANY season.

I'm in Buffalo (Tonawanda, actually...). Anything between here and Syracuse, down to the PA border works best for me. Letchworth is beautiful any time of year - even in (gulp!) snow.
