Before voting begins, I would just like to say that in this challenge, I expect the quality of the pictures to be less than 100%, because taking night photos is the most technologically difficult part of digital photography -- we end up with noise in our photos!!

So ladies and gentlemen, don't give people low scores because there is noise.

I totally agree. I hope everyone realizes too that not all night pictures have to be of cityscapes and moving traffic with light trails. I like the ideas that were discussed in the forum about beasch scenes, comets, and the moon rising over sattelite dishes. My votes will be higher for originality in this challenge. I found out in this challenge that a simple picture may be more difficult to pull off because the noise can so easily distract from the mood of the picture.

I wish I had tryed ISO100. For some reason I got stuck on 400 and the graineyienesss,(oh you know what I mean)is terrible when reduced to 640x480. Only a mighty weak mind can only think of one way to spell a word.

My night shot is a little strange/different. It's been cold, windy, and cloudy all week so I had to come up with something other than a beach or sky shot. It was taken outside at night so I hope it will work. Can't wait to see all the photos!

the nature of the voting dictate that a statement like this need not take place.

if everybody has noise and people are likely to give low scores because of the noise then the "lowness" of the scores doesn't matter and the noise doesn't matter. for example, if the scores i usually give are 4, 5 or 6, but this contest, i don't like the noise in the pics and i give 2, 3 or 4 then all i've done is lowered the average winning score. still, most pics are one point better or worse than my "average" pic and if i gave the 2's a 4, the 3's a 5 and the 4's a 6 my votes are totally equivalent.

it is difficult but not impossible to get a pic with little or no noise.

....and, if there are pics without noise (and there will be) then the premise of your statement is wrong and those people with no noise deserve a better score than those with.

ya dig?

I'm confused!

Yeh I dig.

You can take a low-noise photo if you use a low ISO speed and a long exposure -- which translates to a scene on a tripod instead of people (mostly, anyway) -- that will limit your creativity.

But still. I dig the comment.

Very true on the noise. There are folks with advantages though. If you have a city scape it might be a cliche but a nice picture. If all you have is a small town 40 miles away and nothing but about 80 sodium vapor lights inbetween, a cloud covered quarter moon is no great help either, your chances at a good photo are very limited.

I enjoy available light night shots but I try to pick my nights. Gives you a real appreciation for a full moon.

Thank god my shoulders are big enough to take the slings and arrows.

Oh and by the way I do dig man, can I borrow your copy of Jack Keroac?

You could always fall back on what I did, by taking a picture of something lit by a sodium vapor light against a cloud-covered moon in the background. ;)

So this challeange is made up of 45 photos of noisy moonlit sodium vapor lamps? I was hoping that would be the NEXT challenge!
03/24/2002 04:30:18 PM · #14
I didn't take a picture lit by sodium vapor lamps.
