Question... When I resize my image and save for web should the optimize box be checked?
I use the drop down optimize to file size 1400 but I get different file sizes depending on if that optimize box is checked or not.
1. 2.
1 is box checked. 2 is box unchecked

I believe the correct procedure is to "optimize to file size."
In PS, choose "optimize to file size" from the Optimize Drop-down box, select 1400k, then select the longest dimension (1200 px),
The goal is to include as much information in the file as possible to minimize compression.

In the save for web dialogue box, upper right corner, is one of those ... dropdown menus. Click that and select "optimize to file size" and enter the desired file size. I use 1300 now, to be on the safe side. It will ten choose the amount of compression required to reach that file size. As a bonus, it's a sticky figure (in other words, next time you do this the same file size will be the default).

Easy-Peasy.

Thanks Robert, I understand all that but I can't figure out anything any that optimize box.
If I save it (the way you explained) with the box checked my file size is smaller.

Thanks! I do it like that but what I'm saying is the file size comes up different if that optimize box is checked or not. Notice the numbers that I have circled.

If your entry is within the file size limits, then I would conclude that "optimization" may not be needed...
