I was in California last week and had a day off. Of course I had my camera with me and went hiking around Silverwood Lake which is about an hour northeast of Ontario, CA.

While walking, I saw what I thought was a stick right beside the trail. Well this "stick" slithered up about 3 feet, coiled and then started to rattle at me! Yep, it was a rattlesnake.

I took off for about 30 feet and then stopped to check the snake. Of course he didn't move so I stopped and watched him for a minute. I loaded up my 80-200 and moved in a little closer and took this photo.

Not the best photo by any means, but makes for a great story!!!!

Wow, how did you avoid camera shake :)
Great capture Bill, glad you survived,
Paul.

Remember, they're more afraid of you than you are of them. :-)

(which is fine advice to contemplate as you're laying in the ER on life support)

Shake could have been a problem, thank goodness not a cloud in the sky!!!! :)

Re. they are more afraid.....maybe. I was giving him a good run for the money in that category!!!!!

You were probably pretty safe...unless you were drinking. Statistics show that between 70-80% of all rattlesnake bites involve alcohol. Your snake doesn't llok too intosicated. (C:
We use to play with these (and bullsnakes) as kids on my grandpas farm, right before we had to kill the rattlers.
