anyone else think the voting in the FOR SALE II challenge was particularly brutal .. :(

I'd say was pretty fair.

I thought it was brutal.

I got THREE ones and one three. I didn't know it was that awful of an image. (I did know it wasn't a ribbon-winner, though.)

I thought the images were rather bland.

14th lowest winning score ever. I think the voters agreed with the above sentiment.

I think we have a unabomber on the site. Not all ones, they don't put ones on the eye candy. But they put ones on almost all of the real photos.

unlike Ted, however, I say we let this unabomber bomb away. One is on the scale.

I feel the unabomber is there to validate the offensiveness of my entries.

I got used to the 1 mark. It's there rain or shine.

But since we are not so many still here, I am more puzzled by the low votes in general.
And this is from me who can never figure out during voting time what I get, percentages etc. Just how low I can go!
My highest average score was 7.4 and nowadays I can not go past 6.7
We are seemingly more exigent

My lowest score was 4 - 3's. I understand them because of the upper right corner of my image. I had to process quickly and was surprised I didn't get 1's. I went with it because time was running out and I liked the other 3/4 of the image enough to enter it.
With tat being said, I have another image running that I do not see any issues with and that image is scoring much lower, as a matter of fact it went from about 6.3+ and before my eyes to 5.6.
It sure is perplexing.

I tend to agree with you, but what gnaws at me is that this "If it's not eye candy, it's worthless" attitude has a pretty serious effect on averages when all the eye candy gets decent scores and all the rest 1s, and only 30 people are voting :-(

Still, we're very reluctant to police the voting to the point of telling someone "You're bad, you hand out too many low votes", so where's the line going to be drawn?

he probably loved the name he was given .. :(
a few minutes later after i'd done my due diligence ..
i think he was actually called the Unabomber ..
"In 1980, a bomb mailed to the home of Percy Wood, the president of United Airlines, injured Wood when he tried to open it. As Kaczynski seemed to be targeting universities and airlines, federal investigators began calling their suspect the Unabomber, an acronym of sorts for university, airline, and bomber."

i'm thinking ppl giving out a few 1's is nothing compared to a unabomber .. !! .. ;)

When only 30 people vote this person has a great effect on scoring, they control the final picks. Maybe we ask more of the viewers to vote, I get way more views than votes.

From Bear Music
"I tend to agree with you, but what gnaws at me is that this "If it's not eye candy, it's worthless" attitude has a pretty serious effect on averages when all the eye candy gets decent scores and all the rest 1s, and only 30 people are voting :-("

How can we get more people on DP like the old days? We have a camera store a few towns away from me maybe we can advertise with a flyer at some camera stores.
This site is the best and the people on the site are great we need more great people.

I normally vote on all the challenges I am entered in, but I overlooked this one. Apologies.

I'm guilty too. I usually vote in nearly all of them and life got in the way (busy) this time for both entering and voting. :-/

Indeed! You know I don't agree with the ones in this case (I'm actually talking about the last couple of challenges), but I think it's important the voters have the right to wield them as they wish. The last thing SC needs to do is decide if people are voting according to some reasonable standard.

I'm just saying the more votes the less control the unibomber has.
I was working my day job day and night for a while and I am guilty as anyone for not voting sometimes and not entering but I promise to do better because I don't want to lose this special group.
My son just got a job doing images for a site. He has been my trusty assistant though his growing up for DP Challenges. When he got this offer I gave him to use my 5D for the job.
I am teaching him and he is teaching me editing as my computer skills leave a lot to be desired. I just wanted to share that tid bit because this site is so special and I bet so many of you have had the same experiences with friends and family. I went to graduate school for photo journalism my son learned the power of the eye from me.

The same argument could be made about someone who hands out a plethora of tens. They also control the fates of the images.

For some strange reason nobody complains about 10s :)

That's what always makes me take these discussions with a grain of salt. In my own case, I often give very high scores to images of the "blurry mess" ilk when they resonate with me, but I have yet to see anyone post a thread wondering "who on EARTH gave a 10 to this POS photograph?"

Two off-the-cuff, random thoughts…

1. Would you consider opening numeric votes to registered users?
2. Shouldn’t the low-scoring member be the unobomber?

Hmmmm ... sounds like a hot (VERY hot) thread! :-)

I did think about that, we all like 10's.
Maybe pull the lowest and the highest score for a while on each submit???
I think someone mentioned this in a post.

Look I'm okay with this obviously for this challenge. I have at least one image I really liked in a recent challenge, I was excited about entering and it was definitely bombed. It's the luck of the draw, it's not stopping me from submitting more images. Someone told me or I read if you take shots you want them to be seen especially by a bunch where you share a love for documenting images.

Is the love of 10 the only goal here ?
Yes, we are a challenge site, winning matters, for some people more than others but there is a lot of ado for nothing and nothing can be concluded by these discussions. Let's take photographs people.
