I hate that we're at a point in the digital age where we view every opportunity with intense skepticism, and suspect scams lurking in every corner. Especially when such requests come from places like India. So I'm turning to you guys to help me determine if this is genuine.

I am contacting you on behalf of National Geographic Learning, a division of Cengage Learning, (www.cengage.com), which is a leading educational publisher for the higher education and K–12, professional and library markets worldwide. I am the permissions project manager assisting them in clearing rights for content to be used in a new product. I am reaching out to inquire about the usage availability and cost of the image. National Geographic Learning, a division of Cengage Learning, has an upcoming program “STAND OUT AME STUDENT'S BOOK 2", written by Jenkins and has interest using your image.
It's NATIONAL DOG DAY!!! Don't want to miss THAT party! In celebration, I am posting photos taken by Super-photographer Johanna Siegmann! (All except the last shot.) Thank you also to all the amazing dogs in my life over the past 16 years!!! And, no…I don’t drive like that…Johanna is on the hood of my parked car!

Cengage Learning and its respective partners, affiliates, subsidiaries, divisions and assigns hereby
request, and you hereby grant, a non-exclusive, worldwide, license to publish, reproduce, distribute,
publicly display, license, translate (if requested), perform, create non-dramatic recordings and/or
otherwise include the Material in this current edition and versions thereof, to create derivative
works thereon (including translations and adaptations), related ancillaries and supplements, and in all
formats, including but not limited to print and/or electronic format. You further grant us the right to
provide, without charge, copies of the Work in which the Material appears as needed to comply with
any Cengage Learning accessibility policies to benefit the impaired or disabled.

| It looks like cengage , etc. is real (textbooks can be found on Amazon, etc). Perhaps try going through the company to find out if that person actually exists? |

It looks pretty specific to be a scam, but as you say you never know these days ...
It probably wouldn't hurt to quote them a price -- they already have your name and email, so I don't think you'd be revealing anything other than that their contact info is valid.

Maybe open a separate account somewhere specifically to receive payment from them.
Something with no money in it for them to hack.

The fact that she later states:" If you agree to the terms, you will be asked to sign the official permission letter as is, without additions or deletions." gives me pause as well.
Doesn't that mean she can give the image(s) to her graphics team to do whatever they want with it???
You okay with that? IMNSHO you should ask for a small wheelbarrow full of hundreds if you're going to let them modify the image(s).
I recently donated some images of an old church I shot to a county preservation society that got national historic register status for the church and they had a boilerplate release letter.
It said that I basically give up all rights to the images.
Yeah, right!
I gave them license to use the images to promote their historic project, take it or leave it.
They took it.
Keep us posted. I'd like to hear if you turned it down or they filled the wheelbarrow. LOL!

Jeb makes some good points -- basically giving them all rights to an image (especially if they want exclusivity) should probably cost them into the four-digit numbers ... myself I think I'd want to stick to licensing rather than "selling" images ... also, it might be worth registering the image with the US Copyright Office (if you haven't already) so that any contractual terms are enforceable ...
You might want to run this by  Skip and see if he has any advice. |

and the second paragraph is clumsily repetitive.
I don't have a vetting machine, but I hope it would catch this by the second paragraph. |
