Hi folks,
It's been a while... good to see a lot of familiar usernames, kind of sad to see the low number of challenge entries though.
I've been trying to get back into photography recently. Figured I would start at least entering the open challenges and go from there.

My main goal is to get better at portraits and lighting. Won't completely avoid landscapes but with these gas prices long drives are expensive.

Recently ordered a used D200 and 18-70 kind of as a collector's item but I sure plan on using it in conjunction with the A6400. Would love to go full-frame mirrorless, but not ready to spend that kind of money yet.

Anybody here using the Godox/Flashpoint flashes? I was thinking about getting a few of the smaller ones that support TTL, but I've heard good things about the AD200, could probably swing at least one of those. Probably won't be doing any studio background work, just outdoors.

Any other suggestions in the way of wirelessly controllable flashes? Battery powered, whether internal or external. I've got an Aputure light for video, and will eventually get more of those, but they are big and heavy and not really bright enough for most photography needs.

Thanks,
Jon

Welcome back, Jon. A positive way of looking at the low number of challenge entries is that voting goes faster, and higher odds of placing high!

Don't have any of the equipment you mentioned, but as a portraitist myself, you can pick my brain.

Welcome back!!!

I have two Godox v1 flashes and and one v860II, but they're hot shoe flashes.

That being said, I absolutely love my V1s. The round head gives such better coverage/light. It's a hotshoe flash with a modeling light! And it has a kit of little modifiers including barn door, snout, etc.

So if their other systems are as nice as their hotshoe flashes, I wouldn't hesitate!

I have this controller for the flashes and I've even just put the flashes on light stands and used those in place of my strobes for quicker lighting. I wouldn't do it if I was doing a lot of portraiture, but it works in a pinch.

I don't know if any of that helped, but welcome back! There are very few of us left. But it's worth staying around for. And the more we can get to return.... :)

Thanks Wendy.
I like the look of that V1, it's good to hear that it provides good coverage and light. I am looking at the specs and it is 76 W/s of power, and the AD200Pro is 200 W/s for an extra 50 bucks but then I lose the on-camera ability. When you use the V1 do you find you are using it at close to full power, or is it bright enough to be dialed down a lot? I guess I just don't have context for how much brightness 76 W/s is.

It really is only a flash. You’re not going to get studio strobe power out of them. So working with portraits you’d want the other ones. I was just saying that I’m quite impressed with my godox products, so I’m guessing that there other products are good. But no, they’re not all that bright. They’re good for their purpose which is more fill light that main lights

I'll be curious as to what you think of the AD200s. They're much less expensive than my alienbees. I like my alienbees, but the einstein is so much better.
