I have noticed that we have now Minimal every 2 weeks, what about being fair and predictable by alternating between Minimal and Extended each Friday? This might encourage some DPCers to improve their skills at these two non standard approaches to photography. It would certainly give me motivation to put more effort into photogrammetry.

I'd hardly say that Minimal rules the day over Extended. Quite the opposite in fact.

M = Minimal, E = Extended, S = Standard

On the front page now for challenges you can enter.
1 M, 2 E, 5 S

Previous challenges in increments of 20.

1 M, 4 E, 15 S
2 M, 2 E, 16 S
1 M, 5 E, 14 S
1 M, 3 E, 16 S
1 M, 3 E, 16 S

It wasn't really the point, just an opportunity to start this topic. I am sick and tired of Standard, why can't we have a bit more fun!!? I am getting really bored with the sameness of the challenges!

I forgot to add that I would like to plan for challenges so some predictability would be great!

Sounded like it (emphasis in below quote added for clarification).

I had to come back to my original intention. And to add - even predictable it would not be quite fair because Minimal entries are allowed in Extended while Extended are not allowed in Minimal.

I want a Minimal editing Free Study each month. I mean, come on, we have them for Standard and Extended already. :-) <running for cover!>

I am fine with that but can't we really introduce predictability into Minimal and Extended???

More Minimal challenges are fine by me -- that should greatly increase my chances for ending up in the top five ... :-)

Seems to me we can discuss this to death, or else try it for 2-3 months and see how people feel about it in practice rather than speculating ... since it only involves the editing set and not the topic the "challenge" aspect is preserved.

I'd also like to find a way to make some of the Open challenges Minimal and Extended also -- maybe if we run it as a limited experiment these could be extra Open challenges to try and inspire some registrants to sign up ...

Correct me if I’m mistaken but didn’t someone write that Minimal Is obsolete these days since in-camera settings can radically impact the file. We can break many “Minimal” rules by simply goosing contrast, saturation , dynamic range, exposure bracketing and on and on. Some DPCers even have cameras that can fly! 😬

Exactly. But in Minimal you have to make all those settings/adjustments before you actuate the shutter. The idea is to use your camera's capabilities to produce the best picture you can without further post-processing -- no one says the original has to look like crap.

I'm all about having MORE people enter challenges, not less.

So, I vote "no" on this.

Extended Editing challenges allow all types of photographers, while Minimal limits to only the purists.

But, I'm happy for it to happen, if folks want it.

I think you have that backwards, Lydia. Extended needs some heavy duty software/training/experience. Anyone can do minimal.

The batteries are charged and I'm waiting to enter challenges again, but have zero interest in entering extended editing challenges.

And before the standard "you can enter whatever editing you want in those challenges" mantra rears its head, I can also vote accordingly. Over the years I've found myself becoming less and less interested in composite images.

Please stick to expressing your opinions of the topic (challenge schedule) and not of each other.

Not as much of a one as *I* am: I guillotined the offending posts in a momentary Reign of Terror fit :-)

No change as those who rarely contribute, always win to keep the status quo.

In any case my adventure into photogrammetry has hit a major obstacle, has anyone ever used Reality Capture?

Can't say I have, what's the obstacle?

ETA: $3,750? THAT's an obstacle, LOL...

No, it is $10 for 3500 points on exporting the model, so far I used $2.73, I can live with that :)

The problem is the exported model looks awful in Unreal Engine, free 3D software I used to make my still life in 3D and 3D flythroughs. I asked all gurus and there is no solution.

For DPC my idea was to take 360 deg photos of objects, assemble them into 3D model and then import into Unreal Engine to arrange a scene with lights, fog etc. and take shots of these for Extended editing challenges. So far my beautiful photo scans cannot be used for that purpose :(

I'm for it. Minimal irritates me, but so does extended -- so it's a push. :)

However, I just got an extended editing photo accepted into a gallery -- which I never would have done if it wasn't for extended editing challenges. And the minimal really makes me think (and irritates me), so that's a win, too.

I'll enter whatever you throw at me!

Thank you for today's Extended challenge but pity about timing, I will be away for the next 3 weeks and won't be able to do a photogrammetry based entry as my old laptop is too slow for the 3D software.

PS I solved the problem with Unreal Engine!! I will use it when I am back for the next Extended challenge :)

I go through phases of being less active here on DPC, but I must say that DPC has been the single most important "force" in my photographic journey. The Challenges have forced me to try new things, look at things differently and just learn, learn, learn!

I did the 30 second challenge last night - something I don't EVER do - what fun it was :-)

Interesting .. OK I am restless soul anyway can't bear doing the same thing over and over. I too have found myself drifting towards "straight" photography recently. Not sure if it stems from "I am a lousy photographer, I can't take a decent picture without major edit" and wanting to improve, or if I am drifting towards straight photography as a concept. I used to LOVE composites and artistic edits ...
