I have noticed that quite of few of frequent participants of challenges hardly ever vote or comment. I thought maybe adding the voting and commenting race to the Unofficial Ribbons (if possible) would encourage all challenge participants to return the favor to those who vote and comment on their images. What do you think?

Might be a worthy pursuit with one exception ... make only comments DURING the voting stage count.

As one who already votes on most but could be encouraged to comment more, this is an idea to ponder, for sure. Results might be hard to capture though.

there is already a breakdown of highest (to lowest) commenters, under "Community." And ms PennyStreet, don't comment any more as I am about to pass you in the frequency ranking.

I love this idea or something similar. Comments mean a lot to most of us. I want to know what I did well, and what I can improve on. I think lots of us are in that boat.

Oh yeah! Let the trash talking begin. :-)

This is for 20 years, no annual breakdown. And quite a few people are gone.

I like the idea. A "voting" race cannot be done (individual information not available for me (or you)), but I think a "commenting" race can be done, although it will require a lot of extra coding, so don't expect it in the near future.

Thanks, Henk-Jan. I have assumed that all publicly visible data are available for analysis, for example, my current Votes and Comments from my profile:

"Votes Cast: 61,066 ...
Comments: Made: 4,471"

At some stage I had a spreadsheet that I updated once a week with the most frequent challenge participants to find out how much they vote and comment (that's where this suggestion came from). I did not update it after every challenge and I, obviously, could not know number of their votes and comments for the challenges that were then in voting.

I still think it should be only comments made during voting, and that's not easily split out.

Why? After rollover there are many (majority of comments actually given in a challenge) comments made that are all "fluffy" rather than anything substantial (not always - but usually).

define "fluffy" ..
and then define "substantial" .. :)

I do like a mix of fluff and substance. Say, isn't there a tune called Fluff and Substance?

'fluffy' = "congrats", "love this", "nice", and then just about anything said on front page entries after rollover.
'substantial' = "loved your choice of colortone", "the foreground really complements the comp on this", "spot on focus where it counts", ...

Fluffernutter comes to mind. :-)

I don't feel qualified to provide "substance" and I love to receive "fluff" ;)

Most of active DPCers are not beginners and have their own ways of making images, who am I to judge them!

I think the point of a "substantive" comment is not to "judge" the photographer's compositional or editing choices, but to express how those choices affect you -- no one else is "qualified" to do that.

Ummm, you are? Every time you cast a vote. This is DPChallenge. :-)

This is exactly why I rarely comment these days but I do vote.

Why, because of some banter in a forum thread? Comments left on a challenge entry rarely elicit additional conversation. Now if you're getting PM's from a photographer because they didn't like your comment that's another item, but I don't think that's the case here (actually, hopefully positive PM's are engaged from a comment reaction).

I agree with the general consensus. A great statistic to have, but difficult to code.
