Hmm - first things first, I don't think the link to the dog photos worked. How do I link to one of my portfolio folders?

Hi All,

So I found a gallery that has monthly art shows. You can enter up to three images to the juried show. The exciting part is, if you have work chosen by three different jurors during the year, you can have your own personal show in one of their smaller galleries.

The January show was strictly photography, but the rest are all media shows. I had two photos accepted in that show. So I'm excited and want to get work chosen in two other shows. But it will be harder since there are significantly fewer photos selected in the all media shows.

February's show has a theme -- flood awareness.

I'd like to do some extended editing type photos for the other two entries. But I'm not an extended editing person, so I really am clueless how to proceed. So I was hoping people could help walk me through the process of how to do it right so that it all goes together.

The thought process:

1. I want to take a photo of my neighbor's house across the street
2. I want water to be half way up the house -- the whole thing flooded with half of the house submerged.
3. I have these photos: dog jumping in water Is there anyway I can use these photos and have the dog jumping off the garage roof or out a window?
4. I was thinking about having the neighbor emptying a bucket of water out the window (bailing out the house)

But I'm not sure how to even start, to be honest. How do I get the right angles? There's plenty of water around here -- a river, a pond, the ocean. What angle do I photograph the water?

Please help me figure out how to get started! Do I start with the water and add the house? Do I start with the house and figure out how to add the water? Is it even possible to have the dog in the photo, or are the angles way to wrong for that?

I have one week to get a finished product

I know only one way to create such scene having the objects in the right place, scale and lighting - create a 3D scene of scanned objects using photogrammetry. One week makes it rather difficult ;)

Nope. Can't 3d scan the ocean! ;P

Sounds like a fun project. Wish I could give solid advice, but I'm still rusty at editing. However, I think the dog in mid-air would be a good way to avoid splash editing issues (as if he just jumped off the roof). Good luck! Excited to see how this turns out. :)

Are you still taking pictures at the aquarium? Seems as if water halfway up the house and fish swimming in water would be a natural. Instead of a dog jumping, maybe a cat eying the fish greedily from the roof, would work?

The water in the ocean is generated and if it is not important that the house is that one of the neighbor, you can get a standard American house from a 3D library. You can get a photo-scanned bucket, even a person and a dog. The splash can be generated using special effects. The real problem is that you would be assembling a scene from somebody else's photo-scans which would not be allowed at DPC but maybe it is not a problem for your contest.

I am planning to get into photogrammetry and that would allow me to enter my photo-scanned 3D images into Extended editing challenges. It would be similar to panoramic shots but in 3D except of 2D.

another option is to work in miniature, i.e. a dollhouse in the bathtub.

I thought about that - but since I’m taking photos through the glass on the aquarium, the equivalent would be taking a photo of the inside of my house with the cat looking out the window at the fish. I’ve thought about that… I’m running out of time, though, and my house is a mess. We’ll see how desperate I get.

Maybe try camera angle, fish tank and compositing? Just some thoughts - don\'t know if they will work

Idea 1

For the house to look like it is submerged halfway underwater perhaps a 5 or 10 gallon fish tank with no black trim at top - These ones look like they have clear trim at top lip. Clear would be best for you would not have to do much to edit it out. Either the Koller Tropical Panaview Aquarium 5 gallon fish tank or this 6.7 gallon fish tank where you can just remove lid and not put the filter in (or maybe it might be a good thing to get the surface of the water look like it is moving) Imagitarium Fish Tank

Shoot up at a 45 degree angle through the fish tank so that the water line would be halfway up the house and look like you are taking the shot in the water (this is the best image to describe the look) something like this maybe

Then take another picture staying at same angle, have someone remove fish tank out of frame and then focus on house where your neighbor is in the top floor tossing water out of window with a bucket.

Then composite them together. I don\'t know angle of your dog photo or lighting but might be something you can composite in as well as long as lighting works and angle...

Idea 2

I am not sure you can do this next idea because of the winter weather by you....unless you have access to an indoor pool with good lighting? This is also risky because if water gets into the tank you could ruin your camera. And again, don't know if it will work. This will require two people to do: You the photographer and the other person to hold the rigid photo in the pool at a fixed distance.

Take the photo of the house with the neighbor in top window tossing water out in bucket. Print photo big maybe 12 by 18 and mount it to some flat surface to keep it rigid. Before you go into the water first see what distance the mounted photo needs to be away from camera to get it all in the frame. You might need 2 or 3 prints as these are likely to get water logged while trying to perfect getting the shot. The fish tank will act like a water casing for your camera to shoot through at to get the house to look like it is halfway submerged underwater. Like what this guy is doing at the 1 minute 50 second mark. Fishtank Camera Trick

Hi, what a great opportunity, and what a fab project.

There are lots of "how to" PS projects out there that you can "follow", just use your own images and ideas. The most important thing in composites are your POV.
I am in a rush, I can send more later, but here are some ideas to get you going:

//www.psd-dude.com/tutorials/resources/underwater-photoshop-manipulations.aspx these are actual tutorials. Not sure if they are all free, but you can get ideas and sometimes they tell you the first few steps.

Sorry, need to run, but will send you other stuff later. I was looking for a specific tutorial but can't find it right now.

Thanks, guys!
That gives me an angle I hadn’t considered. And I completely forgot about deviant art! I wish it wasn’t so cold here. Because I do have an underwater camera with a wide angle dome - I could’ve gotten some interesting shots. I think my biggest problem now is I’m trying to work with things I already have since it’s winter, and new wet photos would be miserable.

I’m hoping to get back at it later today. So if you come across more thoughts, they’re definitely appreciated!

Does it have to be a "traditional" flood? If not, maybe you can get an idea of a completely different direction to go in

Flood awareness is the topic, so probably not

If it is awareness you could just photograph one of the big dams in a bad state of repair and so likely to cause a flood.
