I found some disks of home movies that I had converted from tape that I took back in the 70's, 80's and 90's. I would like to download and edit them on my Mac and be able to upload them to You Tube or the like so I can send them to my kids. I'm a real novice when it comes to video. Can anyone suggest a software program that would be easy to use and allow me to download the video and edit to my computer?

Your computer may already have a video editor installed - iMovie?

Adobe makes a consumer-level version of Premier (Premiere Rush) which will probably do what you need. There's at least a free trial available ...

Adobe Premiere is expensive. I use DaVinci. For basic editing if you are on Mac iMovie is fine. I am working on moving some DVD/VCD to hard drives and I really like DaVinci for cuts, exports, even some simple coloring. They have a free version that has most of what I need.

Tried I Movie. I can get it to play the video but It doesn't recognized the files to import. They are very old disks. Maybe the program is not recognized.

What format are the discs? Do you know what software was used to capture them and/or the file format (file-name extension)? I have a fair amount of legacy hardware and software ...

Do you have more than one computer there?

Its Philips_DVD_VR. There are multiple formats. ie. Video_MN.DAT, Video_MN.IFO, R.M.BUP, R.M.DAT, R.M.IFO. There are others as well. I have absolutely no idea what they mean!

Yes, I have 2 MACS.

If it's a DVD like you could play in a DVD player it is probably hard to extract the files -- I'm not so familiar with that format.

If your Macs have video ports a crude workaround might be to play the video on one and re-record it (in a better format) on the other ...

I use HandBrake to convert pretty much everything.

Recently I had a VCD with .VOB files. Made them .mp4 with no issues. I also learnt how to polish disks haha to salvage them. Believe it or not I used Brasso. It worked OK. Recovered about 80% of the content.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll give them a try.
