Just wondering... do any of you with Olympus cameras find that bringing up the Camedia Software on a PC takes an inordinately long time... say on the order of 2+ minutes?

Just tried mine for the first time, came up fairly quickly for me but prefer to use Photo Shop Elements or Corel Photo Paint. Have you done a "Disk Cleanup" or "Disk Defrag" on your computer lately? Might help

I was so unimpressed with it the first time I tried it that I've been importing my photos (I'm on a PC) using the windows key and E, highlighting and dragging to the appropriate folder. I open everything in PhotoShop.
My husband bought me a photoviewing/organizing program with a 250 zip drive that attaches to the television, (I do't rememberthe name...but he thought it was really special) and now we do the preview that way. It downloads them, so I just take the zip over to the 'puter and open in PS. The plan is to spend weekends organizing and burning CDs for archival porpoises.

My Camedia Software comes up quickly. I only use it to get the exif info though so couldn't tell you anything else about it. That zip drive sounds pretty cool...might look into one. :)

I never liked it enough to open it a second time... I found a freeware program called "Downloader" (no url right now, I'm on the road) that will download from my smartcard into a directory of my choice and erase the smartcard (or not if I don't trust it).
But to answer your question, I think I do recall a long startup time being part of why I wasn't impressed. But I don't think it was 2+ minutes... I'd check the defrag as DarylBrown suggested. |

I use XP. You don't need software to get the pictures off of the camera, and if you do properties-advanced you get all of your photo info, f-stop, speed, iso, ...
Then you can edit with any program you like...

My friend has an E-10 that I borrowed alot, before I got my minolta that is...
Anyway, I hate the camedia software... I can't remember it being that slow.. unless you get the thumbnail views straight of the card...
I recommend direct copying the files of the card ... if you want a fast thumbnail program I havent found a faster program than ACDsee.

| Mine doesn't take that long to come up but it doesn't seem too compatable with Windows XP and quits responding quite often. When I got Photoshop 6, I stopped using it. |

I just opened mine and it took 8 seconds. I use mine to get the pics from my camera and thats it. I use Paintshop 7 but it doesnt seem to let you get pics from anything but kodak cameras.

| I don't find opening it slower than any other software. I usually only use if for downloading pictures and for having a look at them and experimenting with adjustments, which I don't save. It's no use for saving pictures for submitting here because you can't control the file size. |

I must be a minority, I loved Camedia, however it is not compatable with XP so now I also use my zip. I think I have the same one mentioned above. Mine is called "PhotoShow" (I think). Any way it is a great tool and was less than $100 when I got it about a year ago. (I still miss camedia though).

| Ditto on the story with XP and the Commedia software. I've never had the opportunity to use it because XP just takes over the job. *shrug* |

I have never used the Camedia software, I wrote a batch file to "move" the photos from the SmartMedia Card to a directory called "Camedia". It's as simple as this:
move E:DCIM100OLYMP*.* C:PicturesCamedia
Drive E: is the drive containing the SmartMedia card. I then use 3rd party products to process, and a freeware product called ExifRead for getting exif info. If anyone would like more info, send me a note.

I've only opened the software a few times - doesn't catch my interest - didn't take any longer than other software. I think that the only time I will use it would be for stitching - that is, when I actually start panaramas. I also use winxp - wondering why it is not compatible - it seems to work for me.
I use ACD See software - I find that it is great for viewing, organizing, moving, copying image files. It even has an editor - not quite as sophisticated as Corel or Photoshop - but it's great for quick adjustments.

| my camedia opens just fine. i only use it sometimes to view a full screen slideshow. Nikon View is a very good prog to copy images from camera to PC - for me, more convenient than XP or Camedia or whatever. |

I think I can still find my disk, but you might check at the Olympus website first -- they may have it for download.
The only thing I use Camedia 2.0 for is to print contact sheets.
I copy the files directly from the card to the hard disk (just dragging them on the desktop using Windows 2000 or Mac OS 9). I usually use IrfanView to browse the folders, and Photoshop 5 for editing. |
