Why do the call this a 3.1 mp when it has 6 million active pixels? Wouldn't it compare to a 6.0mp? This camera seems to be a good deal if so. 6mp for $800, and it has all the features.

Because only 3.1 mp come from the CCD sensor and the camera's software interpolates a larger 6 mp image from that. From what I hear it works quite well, but doesn't have the image quality one would get from a 6 mp CCD. Many have said it is roughly equivalent to a 4 mp camera.

BTW, you can get the 602 for around $600 USD. Check out //www.pricegrabber.com for best camera prices and mini reviews of the vendors.

As an aside, if I were to buy a new camera now I would probably opt for the Minolta Dimage 7 as it is a true 5 mp camera and is loaded with features normally found only on SLR cameras.

Fuji has made a CCD of its own and called it a SuperCCD. This CCD doesn't have the "normal" alignment of ccd-pixels (horizontal and vertical) but more like a honey-cone like shape. This way the pixel density if higher then for a normal CCD. The only way for Fuji to create a picture that utilizes the most from the SuperCCD is to "interpolate" it to 6Mp. This is twice the actual CCD count.

Another advantage of the 3rd generation SuperCCD used in the 602 is that it can mix signals from a group of four pixels at the chip level in order to reduce noise levels. This results in the ability to increase the ISO value to 800 and 1600. Max output is 1280x960 at these ISO value's.
Because of that high speed, this is the first SLR-like with the option to record video at a full 640x480 @30fps.

People who are looking for something like the Dimage 5 or 7 are also looking at the 602 and the Nikon 5700. Check out www.dpreview.com for reviews of all these camera's.

I went for the Dimage over the s602, I wasn't happy with it's output.
But I was tempted.

Mainly Diagonal lines appear very jagged (aliased) espieshally at the 6mp setting... also the camera exibits a Red to Orange shift... I think this is also a pitfall to the Honeycomb CCD layout..

But then I am more interested in Hi-Res output like offset and commercial digital printing so quality was major a concern.

Personally I recomend you compare simlar photo's from the camera's you are interested in... If you have no problems with the output it's a great camera. Unless you also don't like motorized zoom :-)
