Whats it like there? I've never been there, but I was offered a job at an engineering firm in Houston, and it pays pretty decent. Who all lives there from here?

Humid, humid, then hot, then humid and hotter. Then it becomes hell. And traffic's not great, either. My sister used to live there, and I have to say, it wasn't my favorite place to visit. I'm sure those that live there will have some more positive things to say... but you can always visit the original Ninfa's, suck down a margarita, and the rest of it just becomes a blur. ;)

Houston proper is a real bummer. The traffic is bad and it is hot. But, there is so much to do in and around Houston. I have lived here all my life and it has so much to offer. Museums, pro sports, three areanas, Galveston and Galveston Bay, the Kemah waterfront, a short drive to Louisiana, the beauty of the Big Thicket Nature Area, the Anahuac National Wildife Refuge, the fourth best place on the planet to see and count birds, the Gulf coast, a short drive to San Antonio..... If you have to commute it can be bad, but the fourth largest city also has a great many photo ops and places to go and things to do. Under the heat is a great place.

as has been said HUMID!!!! but it's close to the gulf coast, Aransas wildlife refuge,, where the Whooping Cranes winter... I hate driving there, but do on occasion when it's not avoidable.. I live in San Antnonio.

Gotta tell ya, I've lived in humid weather (y'all newfies can atest to that) and now am living in the dry dessert wasteland of Alberta. Trust me, wetter is better. IMO.

Oh, soup, why didn't you tell us you had gone missing from your Texas village.

no intention of offending - it was political...

I've been in Houston for the past couple years and I will probably end up staying indefinitly. We generally have about 10 months of summer and maybe a month of "winter" i.e. it gets below 50 F.

Traffic inside the 610 loop sucks and I would highly suggest driving from where you are thinking about living to where you are working before signing a lease or buying a home. Some routes are notorious for multi-hour transit times to get from downtown to the edge of the city during rush hour.

There are plenty of things to do here and some of the best resturants in the country (imo).

Most people complain about the sprawl of the city which is rather spread out.

Anyway I like it here but then again I've lived in the south for 20 years and the heat dosen't bother me.

i worked for a dermatologist there and we were one of the highest dermatologists in america of diagnosing skin cancer..the sun is very mean there..pack your sunscreen and deodorant

Houston is the place of my exalted birth - gotta letter from the Mayor and everything. LOL Course, everybody got a letter from the Mayor back then.

I don't know diddly about it as I was moved to the Panhandle area when I was 9 mos. old but I've never been tempted to visit. I've heard they have huge roaches. Also heard the crime rate is not so pretty. So would I move there for a job? Better be one hell of a job!

Now Austin on the other hand... :-D

p.s. I see you live in PA now. Have you ever lived in the South? It's a little different ;-)

Houston sucks. Traffic, weather, people (oh I'm sure there are plenty of nice people, just kidding) but the city on the whole is just a pain. There are some nice sites nearby as others have said, and Austin is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours away, so that's a bonus. Austin is the gem of texas. The rest of it can swallow itself for all I care. Wow, I sound angry. I'm really not, though. ;-)

did domeone already say its hot and humid????

Besides the weather here, Houston is nice. Not the prettiest city in the world, but there is a lot to do here or a short drive away. Lots of shopping all over and plenty of malls.

Traffic is bad, and the freeways are always under construction. But you learn to live with it.

I have lived here all my life (37 years) and there is really no other place I would really want to live, I know call me crazy, but its my home and I love it.

A very serious view, Jeremy, from a fellow who has been around...a lot. The Houston weather and traffic are somewhat minor considerations - much more important are the attitudes and beliefs of your potential co-workers. I grew up in that general area of the USA and am very comfortable with it. It is light years different from Philly!!
If you are a relaxed sort of guy who can embrace a down-home, self sufficient, western pioneer approach to life you will make more new friends and be socially happier than you can imagine.

Do let us hear about your decision.

i disagree with this...houston is definately not a "down-home" kind of place. i lived there for 2 years in the nicer part of town and hated every second of it, 50% or more of the people were not friendly at all. this is just my opinion though

riotspyne does make a good point. However most people here in Houston are nice, its just a different attitude.
