think we've done this sort of thing before with
the something old, followed by 'something new'

but how about a

following the rule of thirds

and

breaking the rule of thirds challenges ?

Or some other typical rule of thumbs that we can try following
then breaking

In the first case, it needs to be a terrific example of the rule
working, in the other an obvious 'rule breaker' that still works.
Give all the 'there are no rules' people a workout....

fantastic idea! would definately show how to use them properly/improperly, if you will.
just like how we did "negative space" to teach/learn a new way to look at things.

i'm afraid most people on the site don't fully grasp the rule of thirds even with a tutorial

Perfect opportunity for them to learn! This is what this site's all about! :-)

I think that would be a great challenge!

I also think that would be a great idea.

The challenges, which ask everybody to use a certain technique, I like most. E.g. in the past Negative Space, Light Source, Motion,... This is a perfect way for learning this technique, because on the one hand you practice it when making the photo and on the other hand during voting you see how other people utilised this technique to make their photo good.

I like it. Really gets to the technical side of photography, a good learning experience.

My new camera has a button which will lay down the thirds grid right on the LCD screen. Of course, the manual says you can use this "when you want to position your main subject in the center of the frame..." No wonder people are confused!
