I can certainly help you navigate around the East Bay, but I usually can't stay out too late these days. I have a fairly flexible work schedule, especially in the afternoons. When do you expect to have free time, and just what do you want to see/do?

Cool! I'm pretty familiar with sf but not the secret & really cool places that only 'natives' would know. I am free Sat afternoon onwards. Can hook up whenever after that 'til Monday. Leaving super early on Tuesday.

If you're down, I will PM you my contact info!
Thanks Gen!

Paul, to add to the Racial Justice experience why don't you escort Rooster for a very late night stroll through selected areas of East Oakland.
It holds the possibility of expanding her awareness of the conference subject.

Be sure to carry your cameras with the flash units for the candid opportunities.

Rooster, I don't know if this is "up your alley" or not, but on the 13th there's a special lighting of the fresnel lamp at thePigeon Point Lighthouse and some of us from San Francisco are leaving at about 4:00pm to go down (It is about 30 miles south) and photograph the lights.

The lighting is from 6:00pm to 8:00pm with a brief time for photographers before they start rotating the 16 beam light. It's usually cold, windy, sometimes foggy, but still worth it. If you're the slightest bit interested, PM me and I'll save you a seat in my car.

P.S. Other local DPCers might want to check this out too!

Unfortunately I'm oncall at one of my jobs so I wouldn't know which days I could go shooting, but you can PM me your schedule when the week comes up and I'll see which days I have to work.

Beware the strange weather of the Bay Area:

It was hailing when I was at the zoo.

I swear - I leave San Francisco for a few months and the whole place goes to hail. (Har!)

I only post this pathetic joke to bump the thread again in an attempt to get Rooster a ride. That's a really nice lighthouse to shoot and if I were still there, I'd be glad to help you out. Have a great trip!

If I'm not working that day I might go -- I haven't been there in a long time.

Might visit my old school too, in Menlo Park

From San Francisco it is closer to 50 miles and if past experience is to be trusted you may want to leave earlier than 4. Aside from commuter traffic in the Half Moon Bay area slowing down the drive I went one year and the area was packed several hours before the lighting.

That's on a Saturday, isn't it?

There are several ways there from SF; I-280 to Highway 92, or State Routes 1 or 35 (Skyline Blvd.).

What kind of settings are people going to use?

There's often a lot of weekend traffic. All relatively quick routes from SF go through Half Moon Bay. 1 seems to be faster than 92. 35 would take a great deal of time given the nature of the road.

All too true. But Skyline has some great views to both East and West; I'd be making it a photo excursion, not a road rally. However, I might take Highway 1 myself -- I'm not sure I've ever driven the stretch from Pacifica to Half Moon Bay (there's another lighthouse at Montara too), and the part past Devil's Slide is still open.

Yes. Rooster and I have arranged that I'll meet her in San Francisco. I plan to take Highway One down because it's just plain spectacular. (And yes, it is closer to 50 miles than 30.)

Maybe us DPCers could meet down there and say "hi". If we can find one another in the dark... Anybody got any ideas how to do that?

Anyhow, should be great fun - if it doesn't rain.

P.S. And there's always Duarte's afterwards for Artichoke Soup and Ollalaberry pie.

Just a reminder about the Saturday (Nov 13) lighting of the Fresnel Lamp at Pigeon Point Lighthouse. 6:00pm to 8:00pm; come early for decent parking. Bring a flashlight, etc.

The National Weather Service says the evening should be mostly clear with temperatures in the 40s and 50s. (It'll be colder at the coast)

Rooster is going to get in touch when she arrives in San Francisco and we will be there.
