I was fairly satisfied with 5.6 for my entry in the recent "Neighborhood" challenge.

However, looking back through my images from that shoot, I started wondering whether I'd used the right one. That pole in the middle of the photo bothered me, and I had one which showed a lot more of the garden. I decided to use it for "Free Study".

But instead of entering another very similar photo, I decided to go for colour this time - something I very rarely do.

My score started out very poorly, before peaking at 5.29, but it was mostly downhill from there, ending up at 5.0652.

I guess I just don't do colour well.

I do think that B&W suits this image much better. Color distracts from the subject. Also, the image satisfies the challenge very well. Free Studies are more difficult to get good scores on because there are so many outstanding and diverse entries. Don’t give up on color. In these challenges your score isn’t always a determinant of the quality of the picture. There are many other factors which might reduce your relative score.

I can accept a lower score for a free study, but the difference was a lot more than I expected.

It's just more difficult to get a high score in a Free Study than a theme challenge. Always has been and always will be.

I don't think it's that. My previous 3 FS/EFS scores were all above 5.5. All 3 were black and white.

I tend to overanalyze all my challenge results going right back to when I joined DPC,and there's a dramatic difference between my average scores for colour entries and b&w ones.

Edit to add that my highest score this year by a huge margin came in a free study and yes, it was a black and white photo.

Well, you are one of our B/W Masters, don't you see? You're one of those photographers who just SEE well in B/W terms. It's a wonderful skill.

And then you go and schedule a "color ... or else ..." portrait challenge -- thanks a lot ... :-(

I'd still like to learn how to see better in colour.
