Hello, welcome to my "How I did it" post for my Implied Lines shot, "Incubation".
This shot took.. quite a number of hours to set up. The first thing I did was grab a sheet of 22x28" white posterboard, and plotted out a 21x22 point grid on it, shown here:
Which took me about 2 hours to do. Then, I placed the sheet on the ground, and started hot-gluing Scotch Mints onto each point, as shown here:
This took about.. oh.. 5 hours or so all told. That's 462 scotch mints that I had to glue on there!!! Next, I took a practice shot:
Which convinced me that I was going down the right path, so I finished gluing everything on. (For some reason, I forgot to take a picture of the finished thing, but you can probably picture it.). Anyway, once it was done, I went to town trying to find a shot I really liked, which resulted in these outtakes:
The blue effect is *straight* from camera, and I got it by doing a custom white balance, and then using the flash. I don't know if any of the outtakes are stronger than what I submitted, but that's all water under the bridge.
The shadows and coloring on the ribbon winning entry were a complete accident. They were caused by the lamp I was using to see by while gluing the mints, and the ambient lighting from my tract lighting in my living room. I just did a little hue/saturation and color balancing work on it to bring out the blues, and voila.
So there you have it. Sweat, glue and a whole lot of muscle aching while scrunched on the ground gluing mints to a sheet of paper, and it results in a yellow ribbon. (and 0.002 away from a red.. woah). Hope you enjoyed reading :)

Wow, and thanks for the run down there :)
It certainly shows that putting a hell of a lot of effort into a photo can pay off :)

I did! Even after reading half of this post and wondering how you used mints to hold the eggs in that upright position. I didn't get it until seeing the practice shot and thinking, "Wait a second! He didn't mention how he attached the eggs!"

you spent all that time glueing the mints and your final shot was only a fraction of them.... :) |

You got a lot of great shots out of that set-up. We should have a scotch mint challenge! Congrats, Glen, on a huge success with a lot of hard work and exceptional creativity.

Thanks for the explanation on a very cool pic. You had me fooled too. I thought they were eggs as well. |

now now.. no need to be *that* way ;)
Besides, it was 6 hours that just would have been spent in front of my computer, and now I have this really cool... uh... thing... of .. mints.. sitting there.
