OK, I was very surprised to get blue for this image:

Why?
(those who can still remember voting on it :)

I am not complaining, just curious ;)

Sorry, I didn't mean to comment here. I did give it a 7 though. Looking at it now, I admit that I probably gave it an extra point because of it's relevancy to current political topics.

I didn't vote on it, and I certainly can't say why it got the blue, but I can tell you what elements I think make it a "good" picture within the "traditional" parameters, and would likely positively influence many voters:
-good contrast range, subject is highlighted
-effective leading line effect
-as mentioned, political relevance, referenced in title
-"subject" (the gap) on the LL 1/3 mark
-"secondary subject" (tree) on the LR 1/3 mark
-mist in the valley contrasts with detail in the mountains and foreground, and acts to accentuate detail in the tree
-horizon on the upper 1/3 line
-all of which sums as good composition, focus and exposure ...

Generally, I'm in agreement with GeneralE, however I would perhaps put more weight on the political aspect in conjunction with a new year's resolution not long after a tumultuous mid-term election.

I didn't vote but likely would have been in the 7-8 range. My suggestion might have been to consider stretching the aspect ratio even further toward panoramic by cropping more aggressively off the top and bottom, putting the fence's LL start point closer to the corner.

All that said, it's a strong image on it's own and the toning is really well suited to the content.

Because it's a beautiful image that has heart. The stretch of mountains that can symbolize freedom is in parallel with a highlighted stretch of fencing that can mean just the opposite. And they're both sublime. And the tree that reaches above the hilltop can be felt to be yearning. Your title of hope for the new year speaks to people's yearning for anger and discord and corruption of the soul to subside. The toning imparts a wistful serenity. Fully deserving of acclamation.

Thanks, now I know on what side of the fence the majority of DPCers are. It is good to know :)

Haha, when I look at your profile and the amount of ribbons you earned I have the impression you already know how to please voters!

Just has a lot of visual impact. I find the fence adds something out of the ordinary for a scene like this. I don't think the title influenced my vote at all. I wouldn't have gotten that message just from the image.

I try and sometimes it does work! Especially if the right people are voting ;)

oh yes, so much depends on the "right people."

that might be a challenge topic.

the fence was dramatically lit, which is both visually appealing and makes the resolution not seem like a shoehorn.

the tree in the middle distance is disorienting enough to be interesting. You took a pretty landscape which got the eye candy vote but you made it interesting enough that I gave it a 5. That's how you get a blue.
