I was never in doubt that the challenge could be shot, only that its true nature - a scavenger hunt followed by an art project you then had to photograph and submit - held so little inspiration from a photographic standpoint that most of the participants who didn't have to shoot for it wouldn't. Whether my agitating inspired folks to prove me wrong I will never know, but indeed I was happy to be proven wrong.
With that said, I was on day 6 of hunting for anything to shoot before finding these at the bottom of a bin at local farmers market (I believe I may have danced in the moment). I surely would have given up long before if I didn't have to shoot something. It still feels more art project than it ever will photograph, but I'm not complaining (please - no one think I'm complaining!! LOL). The only reason I ever took more than 2 shots of it is because after my first edit I realized that the blurred image of an ocean that I used as a background would likely earn a DQ under one of the rules so I instead found a non-descript texture that I could use to give me the feel I wanted, printed that and reshot. Saturday I actually brought a print of this to the people at the Farmer's Market to thank them. They laughed out loud. I hadn't thought about it until just now but the first Top 5 I ever earned here was shot at their stand as well. Bookend veggies.

| Just for the record, Jake, there is a whole WORLD of photography which DPCers have traditionally excelled in that involves creating or manufacturing shots out of odd materials and within severe restricti9ons. And almost without exception, those challenges have produced very interesting results. I'm glad this one didn't prove the exception, and I'm glad you motivated yourself to do well. Congrats to you and your team on the big victory. |

Robert, I do not disagree, and had the finals been purely a head-to-head match up of two teams with two incredibly challenging topics I would have sighed and just shot. But (without beating the bloody horse) I've been here long enough to know that the more severe the restriction the lower the turnout, and I've already said my piece about that.
If the idea is for the finals to to be challenging then perhaps the proper way to do them are with invitation only challenges that only the finalists can enter and only outsiders can vote on them? This way at least numbers across challenges should be consistent and they could be as oddball as you cared to make them without making them such that the scores across the two challenges don't feel unevenly weighted.
And it's certainly not that I don't enjoy a challenge or something out of my comfort zone. I do not necessarily enjoy shooting portraits and yet 25% of my blue ribbons are made up of them (likely covering 50% of all my portrait photography), so go figure, maybe I'm doing this all wrong? LOL
Regardless, I'd be remiss if I didn't publicly laud my team. What they've done all year, and in the finals in particular, was beyond exceptional. I think Mary Ann made at least 3 separate trips into the wetlands to reshoot those gourds. It's truly an example of the sum being greater than the parts. We may have had 8 Blues in 7 weeks, but outside of one that was literally shot and entered with minutes to go none of the others were first or even second edits. It's a testimony to this team's willingness and ability to both give and accept a critique. I'm guessing that if there's ever a DPL5 and we're around that we'll be told we'll have to break up the squad, and we're sad about that. But if we had a shot to defend down the road I believe there wouldn't need to be too much begging. They're amazing people as well as some pretty fine photographers.

Kinda sounds like the magic of DPC to me.
