Hi

Can somebody come up with a logical explanation why the top 9 finishers are all B/W photographs?

There is no explanation...

Are you asking for a logical explanation as to why there are Black and White, or why they were voted higer? Or why they deserve to be in the top 9???

Clarify the question.

the most logical reason would be that people like B&W over the colored ones?

Moods & emotions are often reflected better in B & W and there has been a shift in B & W success in the challenges lately, particularly in shots that deal with people/human element.

Master's Challenge: 4½ of the top 10 were B & W (½ was Sonja's desat)
Defining Feature: 4 out of the top 10 were B & W (or duotone/sepia)
Touch: 6 out of the top 10 were B & W (or duotone/sepia)

I couldn't create what I wanted show with colour. So I converted it to B&W and had better luck. Didn't plan for a B&W but that's how it turned out.

I really love your image xion, I think it outshines the ribbon winners, no offense to the ribboners, but I think xion's is better. None of my ribbon picks are even close to the top of the pile except this one.

These challenge results are bizarre. What about this one:

It's so beautiful. I think it got the short end of the stick.

Also, my #1 favorite is:

Such gorgeous lighting and texture and color.

I am surprised, that's all. 9 is a lot, and I don;t think B/W is inherently superior to color. What the challenge resuts seem to mean is "black and white is better for this theme" and I wonder why.

I'm guessing the 'School days' theme invokes a nostalgic feeling that B&W tends to help in conveying... ?

That would be my guess

maybe theese 9 pictures were just better than the other pictures so they got the top 9 b/w or not :p

why does there need to be an explanition? The top nine were voted by you the voters as the best of the bunch and they just happen to be B/W. Simple as that!

But, and of coarse this is a big but.....

And If and this is a big if.....

Everyone hated black and white. I would get my first ribbon.

:)

/mucho sarcasm.

"Take us back to the "good ole golden rule" days! ..."

With that in the challenge discription, and that B&W images generally give a feeling of age (since B&W was around first) -- I am not surprised.
